Convert a Photo into Vector Art

Farhad2000says...

Oh god that's a ridiculously long way to get from bitmap to vector art.

I wouldn't do it that way, I reckon the best thing to do is think like a stencil artist. Which is far faster then this method.

Care to elaborate? This method has stood me well for quite a while so I'd be interested to see a better one. I have found quicker methods but the quality was poor compared to using the pen tool.

Why on earth is he using PhotoShop? It's a raster program, and handles vectors very poorly (that's what Illustrator's for!) - obviously, this guy's not in the design industry. And if you wanted to be really quick, you can use Illustrator CS2's Auto-Trace function to do it for you. I've used Adobe software for over eight years - the StreamLine based Auto-Trace is actually surprisingly accurate (but I don't recommend it to my students - as they're lazy enough as it is!)

Plus, technically: it's not a vector image...as he's rasterized the mathematics into pixels to add shading.

It wasn't a smack-down aimed at anyone other than the Brit who produced the video...I'd never do a "You shall not pass" style down vote - as at least he's using the Pen tool; plus it's a good starting point for people not unfortunate enough to have worked in design!

James: I'll do some for you if you want...I know Illustrator better than any other software (it's my favourite! Damn, I'm such a geek...)
