A total, almost unimaginable, waste of scientific resources, intelligence and funding. The moon is pretty much useless as a "test" for colonisaton. As Carl Sagan once said it would be one of the biggest mistakes in NASA history to set up a colony on the Moon. If we truly wanted to become interstellar travellers and go deeper into our solar system and leave our solar system, a staging base and half-way point would make leaps and bounds more sense on Mars than the Moon. The Moon is just too damned close, and there's nothing there.

^except that it's much easier to get mass into spaceflight from the moon, and there are raw materials there.

Make the moon the new Iraq. With that perspective it's not really that expensive, and it just might make me regain faith in humanity.

for me, the moon crumbling scene from The Time Machine comes to mind.

If only the US had declared war on the moon, we'd have a hell of a moon base.

I don't agree. The moon has 1/6th Earth's gravity, Mars 1/3, so it's much easier to take off from the moon. With the right technology stuff could be built on the moon for future missions, solar panels could be placed for energy and fuel generation. It costs much less fuel and time to go to the moon. Also it's not true that the moon is useless. It still has a lot of unknowns and could tell us a lot about the earth and how it formed.

...It still has a lot of unknowns and could tell us a lot about the earth and how it formed.

Like that it's hollow and full of aliens! Seriously, though. Sagan was a bit of a dreamer, and purportedly a pothead (bless his soul).

I think that this assessment of a Mars mission is pretty on target...

"Here scientist are trying to simulate the totally alien and unfamiliar environment.."
*Fish swims into picture*

Lockheed Martin is in on this... Try to not screw up space missions by using imperial measures again guys!

The moon is a lifeless rock, I would rather them figure out how to support lift down here, because apparently some of us are finding it hard to get food.

NASA has developed more of our current technology than you'd believe. IMHO, give them more money and watch what wonders they invent.

Better use of 100 Billion then say invading Iraq. At least in this case we would gain in knowledge.

Fuck all you haters, imagine how fucking awesome sports will be in our MOON STADIUM. In our fucking MOON BASE.

Interestingly, I was joking about how awesome a moon base would be at dinner today.
