What happens when Paul Giamatti tackles the metaphysical? In this magical new film from arthouse director Sophie Barthes, Giamatti plays himself (or, rather, an actor by the same name in an alternate reality where science and philosophy coexist), stumbles upon an article in The New Yorker—where else?—touting the benefits of soul removal, and decides to give it a whirl. As the protagonists in deadpan pseudo-science movies like Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovich often do, Giamatti begins to doubt the merits of his life-altering science experiment, but as fate would have it, his soul has been caught in a trafficking ring and is facing transplantation in St. Petersberg. Giamatti delivers in Cold Souls his usual brand of deadpan droll, the sort that’s as depressing as it is comical. And as entertaining as it would be to take this movie at face value, it’s the sort that will haunt viewers until they themselves do a little soul searching of their own. -Daily Beast
