what people find offensive is that ms. coulter uses "gay" as a smear. it is offensive that she lobs it at her political enemies as if it's a bad thing. she might as well have called him hispanic or black, but for, of course, the skin factor.

interestingly, dag, william gibson speculates a bit on the nature of this american divide. i'm not sure i agree with him, but i haven't explored it enough to really have a clear perspective. he compares the left/right polarity to the paradigm-shift model (of kuhn's _Structure of Scientific Revolutions_), where the two paradigms, old and new, literally cannot communicate, as the entire worldviews on which they're founded are incommeasurate and cut up the world differently.

like i said, i'm not sure i agree, as kuhn was describing a different sort of process. at this point, im not sure how well kuhn transfers, conceptually.

i just re-viewed gibson's page, and i am not exactly accurate in my description. he's not really writing of the left/right divide as much as the 3rd-generation/4th-generation war models.

No one's denying it. The difference is, Republicans worked to oust Nixon once evidence of criminality was apparent. When Bubba screwed up, the unethical Democrats fought tooth and nail to hold on to their corrupted power. UNacceptable.

Are the conservatives posting here aware that George H. W. Bush had a mistress all through the time he was Ambassador to China (he took his mistress with him, and Barb stayed at home), when he was head of the CIA, and when he was Vice-President and President? Her name is Jennifer Fitzgerald. This information is not from a scandal sheet, but from the Times of London.

The right-wing attack machine spent a huge pile of the American people's money attacking Bill Clinton relentlessly and nothing they came up with stuck. Finally, they got him to testify before a grand jury and and were able to ask questions about the one subject that every single human lies about - sex.

I have no doubt that George W. Bush is currently faithful to his wife. But that's the only positive thing I can say about the man, and that hardly seems like the most important criteria for President of the United States. The fact that he let the man who killed thousands of Americans in the World Trade Center get away in his haste to fight a pointless war against a tin-pot dictator that his OWN FATHER had good reasons to leave in power (read Bush and Scowcroft's book for the full story).
