I dunno, maybe there's some kind of clue in the name of one of their gene-brothers. If only there was some big giveaway, a glaringly obvious pointer in the direction of why they like to climb and balance. If only there was a general hint, something to even start us off somewhere in the name of something physiologically and genealogically related like, oh i dunno, pick a name at random, let's say the MOUNTAIN GOAT.

Anyone got any ideas?

It's a beneficial trait to have as a survival instinct. Better view to see food with and to spot an escape route in rougher and hillier terrain that can help them away from encroaching predators. Eagles will take kids but older goats are generally safer from airborne predators, so being up higher is generally safer.
