Studying classic 'book lines' by Grand Masters is an excellent method for chess players of all levels to better their game. The idea of any opening is to get to a playable middle game. Modern Chess Openings vol. 14 is essential for learning, not only openings you enjoy playing, but also defenses to openings which are causing you havoc and frustration, and are particularly helpful for beginners. I recommend Idiot's Guide to Chess, The Tao of Chess, and the Winning Chess Series by Yasser Seirawan.
