I stumbled across this on youtube, and normally i'm very skeptical of the possibility of these types of projects working, but this one was so simple and elegant that I was totally convinced it would work with some more testing.

My idea would be to make the spinning wheel have a latch that forces the driving magnet away from the gate when it rolls around, but this guy has his own ideas on how to do it.
