You can burn pretty much anything, like steel if the particles are small enough! You'll need rather fine fibers of steel wool for this to work, and they have to be separated a bit. Then create a short circuit with the battery and voila!

I don't know about brillo pads itself, but this can be done with pure steel wool you can buy fron a hardware store (I have done this lots of times when teaching a science class) =)
