Breaking: Oklahoma Highway Patrolman Fights with EMT 5/28/09

Oklahoma, May 28, 2009 - In what appears to be a struggle that endangered the safety of nearby citizens rather than preserved it, Oklahoma highway police pull over an ambulance rushing a patient to the hospital because the ambulance drivers refused to move over for the police. What follows is an altercation between EMT workers and police officers while the family of the ambulance patient gets caught in the middle.

The altercation that kicks off this insane story begins at around ~1:43 in the video.

This clip is raw video shot by the patient's son. WUSA 9 has more news on this story including witness statements.

Very very poorly handled by the police. If the ambulance was speeding or driving recklessly they could have taken down its information and arrested/fined the driver *after* delivering their occupant to the hospital. Or better yet, they could have gotten in front of the ambulance and helped to divert traffic. Instead they put someones life in danger. To serve and protect? Not here.

I'm frankly amazed, and glad, that the family involved was able to stay as calm as they did. Don't know how well I would have handled watching such a brazen pissing match while someone in my own family's life was being endangered by it.

From Youtube:
"OHP says before the home video was recording, the paramedic assaulted the state trooper.
Witness Diana Walkup says the paramedic never touched anyone until the patrolman grabbed his arm."

There is a lot more info there, but I still have no idea why the ambulance was pulled over in the first place...

If this happened to a member of my family. I would demand to know the reason why, the medics were pulled over. And if they said "cus they didnt get out of our way" or something to that effect, I'd blasted them. The video only gives part of the story, but, it doesnt look good for the cops.

After I got my relatives safe, I'd go hunt down the captian of these two officers, and HELL would be just three steps behind me. I'd get a lawyer, to sue the officers for endangerment in civil court, and then criminal by a DA.

That is unexcusable. very unprofessional on the part of police officers. And REALLY not the norm of police officers. While out here in MA, officers are pretty professional. I would think Oklamhoma is the same way.

You don't know what the ambulance was doing.. A speeding ambulance that runs unsafely through the intersection is much more of a danger to more people then some traffic stop.

Of course if it is critical condition they discover, they should escort ambulance to hospital and then deal with nonsense.

Lights and sirens do not mean you can break the law, regardless of what cops think.

Interfering with an EMT who is performing patient care is a felony crime, even for cops. The EMT was reciting the law to the officers, and that made them more mad.
These cops are clearly in a rage. Checkout that choke hold, is that one that is taught at the academy? And the cop says "your under arrest", then he lets the EMT go, thats not how its supposed to work. If your under arrest, then thats it, theres no unarresting.
Also, the police never ask about the patient... they dont care! They are mad with rage thinking that the ambulance driver disrespected them by not getting out of their way.
Fire those cops before they kill somebody, if they havent already.

Im not sure how it works in the US, but in Australia, that's not the case.
There a special provision in the roads act that allows emergency vehicles to disregard all road rules in the event that they are en` route to a critical situation. Rushing someone to hospital covers that.

This is completely unacceptable.

EMT: Trooper's Dash Cam Will Clarify Everything
http://www.ktul.com/news/stories/0509/627284.html

Tulsa - The paramedic involved in a confrontation with an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper caught on a cell phone camera says he doesn't expect any charges to be filed against him.

Maurice White, Jr. is the critical care paramedic seen in the video that has created quite a stir not only here in eastern Oklahoma, but all over the nation.

The video shows the aftermath of a traffic stop that took place while the Creek Nation ambulance was taking a patient suffering from heat exhaustion to the hospital. The ambulance was pulled over by the trooper because troopers say the driver failed to yield to his patrol car.

...................

White posted a message on NewsChannel 8's message board Friday morning, responding to the many questions our viewers have had.

He says quote, "I assure you that time and the trooper's dash cam will clarify everything."

He says the reason he got out of the ambulance in the first place was because he believed a person in the trooper's car was in need of medical attention.

"It was the fact that the trooper was approached at such a high rate of speed, and driving so erratically, I assumed that the woman in the front seat of the cruiser dressed in civilian clothing needed immediate help," white says. "That is why I initially stepped from the rear of the unit."

Troopers have accused White of assaulting them prior to the confrontation caught on the cell phone camera. That's something only the trooper's dash camera may be able to clarify.

Alright, lets see this end in some firings and then ... you know what? i bet the ambulance driver would squash it with a handshake, because he's not a fucking dick

What fuckn bullshit. Its a god damn ambulance! Of course its going to go fast and worry about somebody dieing in the back. What the hell is this?

Technically the ambulance had NO lights or sirens and entered in intersection with a cop with sirens, and then proceeded not to pull over. However after they should have just proceeded to escort ambulance and then deal with them at hostpital.

The patient in the back was not in fact suffering from heat exhaustion. According to the paramedic's report, his professional opinion was that she was suffering from emergency cardiac problems.

Lights and sirens are not generally used for transporting patients with heart troubles. They have a nasty tendency to exacerbate them.

That's not what happened. The police car did not have its siren running--just its lights. According to all the reports filed, it pulled up behind the ambulance at a very high speed and kept pace with it three feet from the rear bumper. The police car had approached too quickly for the ambulance driver to have noted his approach, and given the boxy shape of an ambulance, it's impossible for the driver to see someone so close. (This is also why you don't pull up that close behind semi-trucks, as well.) The first the driver saw the cruiser was when it whipped around the ambulance and passed.

The police cruise had been en route to assist another officer, but the situation was apparently resolved before they arrived; a couple of miles later, the cruiser pulled the ambulance over. It was not unreasonable at all for the paramedics to assume that there was some sort of emergency in the cruiser itself; it is not standard practice to pull over ambulances. Instead, the procedure is to contact the operator to find out what hospital the ambulance is going to and meet them there.

The rest is on the video.

1. The video is shot by the victim(s).
2. The woman was in the ambulance, hence victim.
3 The family that was not at the scene, so unreliable.
4. witnesses that don't know the situation as to why they got pulled over to begin with, also known as unreliable witnesses.

It obviously is being played out more than it is, because if it was a real emergency the EMT would of not even stopped and continued to the hospital like they normally do. For the guy to say "I thought he had someone that needed medical attention" in the police car shows it was not as bad as the EMT says the person it the ambulance was.

You didn't quote my whole statement, I said " And the cop says "your under arrest", then he lets the EMT go, thats not how its supposed to work. If your under arrest, then thats it, theres no unarresting"
I realize that cops will do anything they want regardless of the law, and then let the lawyers work it out later. But when he unnarested him , He is admitting it was a bad arrest and/or he learned new facts and decided he had made a bad arrest. Watching the video , I don't see the officer learning any new facts, He is just backing down from a bad rage induced arrest.Police shouldnt arrest someone and grab them by the throat in an illegal choke hold and then pretend it did't happen.
Thats not the way its supposed to work!!

Maskiki, Thats complete bullshit! In some states the arresting officers supervisor would be needed to "unarrest" somebody.
Laws vary from state to state.

lol.. cops can arrest you and release you with a summons. wait to internet lawyer. Also, he can place person under arrest and let them complete their emergency life saving.

The comments released by the police investigation so far clearly state the ambulance DID NOT HAVE SIRENS OR LIGHTS ON. Period.

Also, it is a felony to assault EMT while on duty. I'm sure the cops won't get charged however...

I've probably have a better idea of how the legal system works in the US and Canada than you do. AP, SN, APDN, JDR, RECG, PTAP all work at the will of the officer. Whether that be at the street level or at the station. Thanks for proving you just don't have a clue on what you're talking about.

UPDATE:

The trooper Daniel Martin ended up getting 5 days unpaid suspension for his role in the incident. Which, given the Good Old Boy system so prominent in Oklahoma, is probably about all you can expect. They should have taken the guy off patrols, but they didn't.

As a result, he's now under investigation for a second incident this year. Apparently, he beat a man with a nightstick for no reason. I wish I could say that I'm shocked they didn't put him on desk duty, but that's Oklahoma for you.

I think we should continue cutting pay for police officers and let the private police contractors move right.

The police force always has less money then it needs especially in human resources. MOST of the budget goes to stupid contractual shit pushed forward by private firms (guns/detectors/etc).

Not a job market that attracts good people.
