Blasphemy! You dare defile the sacred refuge of men worldwide?!

The Grand Poobah of Penis commands you to put an end to this travesty!

God, that dungeon master’s answer was terrible.

The job of the DM is first and foremost to make sure everyone is having fun. If you’re not fudging rules (or making them up on the fly) for the sake of dramatic storytelling then you’re not really getting into the spirit of D&D, in my opinion.

I suspect the girls' reaction to the game has a lot to do with how the game was run. Back when I was those kids age, we were mainly playing dungeon crawls looking for epic loot--basically a “Monty Haul” campaign. The role-playing aspect was minimized while combat was heavily emphasized. The story only existed to drive us to the next combat encounter. Sure there might be some girls into that (just like in video gaming there are some girls into hardcore FPS games) but I wonder if these particular girls would have been as okay with D&D if the game were run that way.

It's not -just- your opinion, @SDGundamX. Those same thoughts went through my mind when I listened to the GM's explanation of the game. OTOH, he seems to run a game that the kids enjoy, so perhaps his poor answer was more a matter of nerves (about being interviewed).

The timing of this video is interesting, since I'm participating in a small gaming convention this weekend myself. And while it's not a 50/50 split in the genders, it's probably around 60/40...which is way better than it used to be.

Ironic that one of the most intellectual, group reliant games is dominated by boys... Especially considering you have to wait your turn, learn to share and shit boys traditionally will not do often.

If, by "shit boys traditionally will not do often" you mean "shit inappropriate to the macho-image some boys are encouraged to take on", then it's not odd at all. Those are not the boys that generally play RPGs. It's just one example of why geeks are superior to the run-of-the-mill thugs, hoods and jocks in school. Geeks tend to be willing to use their heads, and not just for busting through walls.

It's too bad and kind of sad that all the girls said they enjoyed it and would play it again. D&D came out what 30 years ago or more. Maybe this is a good sign that things have changed enough where there's less type casting and people can do what they enjoy.

I had a girlfriend awhile back who said that she probably wouldn't have dated me had she known I used to play D&D. Good thing I got my hooks into her first before letting that one out of the bag.

Final thought is that I bet if the girls continue to play, the crude humor would ramp back up. The girls might even like that too.
