Maher talks about candy being left in the freezer, seeing Mary in a grape, and the "good ol' small towners" vs. "snooty cosmopolitans" mentality.

Wow, that's going to piss a lot of people off. Usually when he insults half of America it's for a more meaningful distinction than geography.

This does not help Bill.
When you sound like an asshole, we all sound like assholes.
At a time when it is so goddamn easy to make fun of the right, this is the best you could do!?!

Well though he has a habit of delivering his point in a very dickish way and personifies that snooty eastern "elite" image while doing so, i still think the basic point is very true. Americans dont know what America was founded on, so in a sense the most patriotic Americans might not know what America is. As a person who has lived in multiple southern states most of my life (and one northeastern one) i can say that its true that the south and the west have this idea that the New England states especially have always tried to fuck this country up and its those damn people who will ruin us. They see themselves as the true Americans and make comments like "American started in the South". I think somehow they have confused the civil war with the revolutionary war and see those damn Yankees as the problem, and not to bring Ron Paul into another discussion (since he is a TRUE Conservative) but the present day Republican party who loves those red states and touts themselves as "conservatives" and keeping the country the way its always been, sure arent following the Constitution anymore. I would respect them more if they just ripped it up, pissed on it, and lite it on fire. At least then they would be honest.

A lot of what he says is true, but in this particular instance, he would just be pissing off a lot of people.

* Yes indeed your founding fathers were all for separation of church and state and science and rationality and treating everyone with respect. BUT to start turning this into a West vs East thing is not a good idea. Even if it were started by the Republicans, best not to propagate the myth. There can be well minded and meaning people in any part of your country, don't start getting people offside just because they live in California.

* Insulting small towns en mass... erm, not a great idea. While there are a lot of issues in small towns (boredom leading to drug use and young pregnancy being right up there... yes, the facts support that), it's not a good idea to piss off all small towners. There are good things in small towns too, more community interaction, more looking out for each other etc. Which can be very absent in the big smoke.

* Trying to put brunch up against going to church is just going to piss off so many people, including those in the 'elites'. I would pick brunch over church any day of the week, but trying to make people think it's a viable alternative to 'being a good Christian' is going to make them think so little of you and turn them against what you're trying to say.

I usually love Maher, and I agree with his views almost entirely. BUT, when there's an election at stake, and being in the public eye means that what he says CAN actually have an effect on the outcome... I wish he'd do it with a little more intelligence.

I live in the west. I grew up in a smaller town. I thought it was hilarious.

his delivery is crude, but just because he loses speaker points doesn't mean he loses the debate. maher's points make sense and they do not float on a 'believe it because i said it' rhetoric. their foundation in fact, while still debatable, at least gives credibility, and with credibility one can build confidence.

besides, i'd guess the majority of maher's viewers share his standpoints which is voiced in his typical snide asshole-ism... which can be funny.

shrug
