I just saw him interviewed on UK tv and he got absolutely flustered when asked about why Brits are having to pay so much more than Americans for Vista. He ended up side-stepping it altogether, some nonsense about taking a global view of the market.
He's not a great business man is he? If Microsoft had ever competed fairly I wonder how big they would be today.

Did you see the end of the show, they had the back of a dorky Gates-type exit the studio and knock papers and coffee out of people's hands.

What a dumb infomercial this was, couldn't they ask a single personal question, like what's it like being super rich, or charities, or anything.

because he was just there for a promotional spot, that's it. it was release day (or pre-release day, not sure) and they were just trying to reach out in other ways to people. it really was a rather quiet release and there's been tons of problems along the way, so i don't blame him for sidestepping the question, seeing as how it would just prolong the promotional spot. he's got people to see, and places to be...

for informational purposes (a quick read through the technews topics in the bluesnews archives), the uk release was probably more expensive due to the fact that the european commission asked for a ton of changes to be made in the OS in order to fulfill an antitrust agreement. not only were specific details not mentioned in the agreement, but a ridiculous timetable was given to fulfill it. anyways, if you're interested, the information is there.

Deano, I'd be willing to bet the company would still be huge. Windows WAS an innovation, regardless of how poorly it's kept up in the recent past. As for Gates being a poor businessman...well, QD-OS and a couple of billions of dollars disagree with you.

Problem for Gates is that Google has taken over online services under his watch and Apple has been making huge inroads into mainstream consumer electronics.
In the last year they've tried to catch up with online and the Zune just launched but none of their products do anything for me. I'm used to Windows but I'm happy with Windows 2000 - spending hundreds of pounds on hardware upgrades to run Vista seems a bit masochistic.
