I thought we weren't supposed to feed the bears? That one bear waving, wow! He's waving like a man and pointing to his mouth! It almost looks fake. (or is it?)

Overload! I can't get over these bears!

Fnord, what about this is depressing? They're not suffering...they don't have to hunt. Three hots and a cot! ...full medical and dental too, lucky bears.

They arent supposed to be doing this, thats why its depressing. Its against their instinct and nature

What is more depressing?

The fact that these bears are doing this or the fact that every city in the world aspires to keep a zoo.

It's against their instinct to want food? That's nature talking right there!

I don't understand why people think zoo's are immoral? Understand human nature... People will take care of what they love right? When we are able to see these creatures up close, we empathize with them and care what happens to them.

These creatures are living, breathing petitions for Conservationism. Ambassadors for the cause! Also take into account of the many animals that are rescued that cannot be returned to the wild and have homes in zoos.

Imagine how many people that are lobbing for environmental changes and animal protection now... were inspired by seeing these animals upclose in a zoo when they were kids?

I don't find zoos immoral, but I find this depressing because it's like teasing them... I think zoos should ideally display animals as close to as they would be in their natural habitats as possible, like at the San Diego zoo, near to where I live. Shouting out at them and essentially having them perform and do tricks for snacks just seems a little off to me, though I can't outrightly call it "immoral."

I'm sure it's mostly harmless, but it smacks of something just... sad to me. They seem a little crowded too, though some animals like to be crowded in so I can't say for sure if that's something wrong.

I think I agree you on that point, fojlz. They were crowded.

My family went to the NC zoo last month. They've tried their best to create a natural habitat for them....so much so in fact that we hardly saw the animals!

Hey, Boo-boo! This doesn't look like Jellystone to me! Ha-ah-ah-ay! Give me some food from your pic-a-nic basket!

SG, I agree with you about the whole "three squares and a bed" idea, but one thing to keep in mind is that people are a-holes and will throw junkfood, plastic wrappers, bottle caps, and other dangerous items at them. I've never worked at a zoo but I've heard it's depressingly common. They should have a barricade so people can't throw *anything* and then these dudes could get by on the three squares a day provided to them by the zoo's *dietician*, all engineered to be what a growing bear needs.

I'm with you, fojlz. This is just unnatural in the truest sense. There's just something about it that rubs me the wrong way.

Then they've gone and crammed what looks like 15+ bears into one tiny concrete enclosure with barely any scenery or environment to speak of. Just seems wrong.
