This is a pretty negative look at the training of the ANA. Though there is still much work to be done, the ANA has made some amazing advances, including a Canadian-trained unit recently repelling a Taliban attack without foreign assistance (see: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/afghan_cda_village_attack).

Yes they are backward and many of them use drugs, but you can't expect a country to go from having no army to having a competent, professional military in such a short time. Just imagine if we took a handful of civilians from an average North American city, handed them rifles and some gear and told them to win a war against an experienced and well equipped enemy. I guarantee you that the average yuppie would be a lot less useful than the these fledgling Afghani soldiers.
