Babel fish - Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy

From the 1981 BBC TV series.

In all honesty, I didn't think the movie was that bad. Sure there were some parts that could have used some work, but as a whole, the movie turned out pretty decently. And in any case, the Guide entries were perfectly fine in the movie. I can't recall anyone complaining about those. (As they were word-for -word the same as the book . . .)

Let me just say that it's best to leave your exposure to the BBC version of this adaptation to just this clip, it just hasn't aged gracefully at all. The movie is honestly a piece of tat, I mean them falling in love? Having Zaphod's 2nd head INSIDE of his first? Seriously?

I think the only way it could really ever work if there was animated version, there has to be just too much of suspension of belief for it to work with actors and stuff.

i used a quote from this in one of my songs. as i'm not 'selling' my music, but rather, giving it away, it would fall under fair use, right?

anyways, the movie was horrendous when compared with the book. but then, most movies are. one of the only exceptions of book-to-movie films for this, was The Green Mile. I suppose the LOTR trilogy would be close, but there was still a LOT of 'hollywood' in that movie.

Do note that the entire movie script was written by Adams himself, with very few and minor changes making it into the final movie. Also note that to many fans of the original radio show, the book does not compare. (And indeed, in some cases it doesn't.) But the point was that Adams reinvented the story for each different medium it was in, making changes that were often controversial to the fans. Knowing all that, I find it quite difficult to judge the movie harshly, as I consider it an "alternate universe" version of the story, as are the book, the TV series, and the radio show. In my eye, they each carry something great that none of the other versions have.

Besides, the over-exaggerated "Earth Blowing Up" scene has got to be one of my favorite cinematic moments of all time.

After reading the book and the whole HHG series some 4 or 5 times now, I really enjoyed listening to the audio books of the HHG series read by douglass adams. What a treat to hear him tell the stories.

I don't know much about the BBC production - but I gotta say, the narrative delivery here is utterly flat. I liked the movie for what it was. I agree with Sylvester - it wasn't trying to be a faithful reproduction of the book.

Don't get me started on Jackson's mangling of The Lord of the Rings. (For future reference, I will automatically downvote any clip from it.)

Contact - loved the book and the movie. My only problem with the movie is the ending, which is completely different from the book, and leaves the viewer with a distinctly different impression of "what happens next".
