A former transit police officer who allegedly shot dead an unarmed man on an Oakland train platform on New Year's Day was arrested Tuesday in Nevada, officials said.

A Douglas County jail official said 27-year-old Johannes Mehserle was in custody under a fugitive warrant issued in California. The official would not give their name because the arrest had not been announced.

Karen Boyd, a spokeswoman for Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, confirmed the arrest and said the mayor's office had been informed of it Tuesday night.

Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff is expected to announce details of the arrest Wednesday. There was no immediate word on what charges Mehserle faces.

Well, the officer refused to answer internal investigators, plead the fifth, then resigned, then left the state.

I'm pretty sure the arrest has to do with another rally planned for today:

The rally, planned for 4 p.m. outside City Hall, is being organized by the Coalition Against Police Execution, a group that started on Facebook in the wake of the New Year's Day shooting of Oscar Grant by former BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle.

The group held a rally last Wednesday at the Fruitvale BART Station, ... When it was over, 105 people had been arrested. Oakland officials initially said 300 businesses were damaged, but they reduced that total this week to about 50.

Still, it's amazing that a police officer is being, presumably, charged with murder. They usually get administrative leave, with pay, for this sort of crime.

I saw a creepy thing in Cole Valley (nicer neighborhood in SF) yesterday. Two officers came into the cafe I was working at and they both had smiley face stickers on the base of their gun clips. Because the guns are holstered 'barrel down,' the stickers were positioned to be right side up and obvious from their backs. I know they have a tough job, and I like to joke around as much as the next guy, but I thought it was distasteful and really unprofessional given what just happened two weeks ago, 10 miles away, on the other side of the bay bridge.

Cops need rotation.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like when you put guys in the midst of shit the shit starts rubbing off.

I'm not anti-cop. Very few of us are.

But I'm sick of little fuckers with Napoleon complexes. I'm sick of "whoopsie-daisies!" I absolutely fucking hate SWAT team assholes who kick down doors and beat the shit out of anybody in sight.

I fucking hate the DEA. They are a big part of the problem and most of them, the smart ones anyway, know it.
