I guess we know who won this one - Comcast now charges ~$100/mo for cable plus internet plus voip. And you can't unbundle and just get raw 'net without basic cable tv.

It makes me think....

Surely these cable companies are paid to broadcast channels on their networks?

Lemme put it like this.

Coke has a product they want advertised. Coke therefor pays the Discovery channel a sum to have them place their ad on that channel. Discovery can only make money if their channel is broadcast into American homes.

Discovery therefor pays Comcast a sum to have them broadcast their channel and all it's commercials.

So,..... wtf?

"Discovery therefor pays Comcast a sum to have them broadcast their channel and all it's commercials."

That is not always the case. Right now in Canada a few channels are seeking the right to charge cable companies to air their station because they get them free right now. Cable companies are protesting against it.

Comcast, Shaw, Rogers, Verizon, etc usually make their money just off their subscribers while Discovery, TLC, Fox, etc make money off the commercials. Stations want to change that so they make money from commercials AND subscribers.
