WTF?! I recommend changing the title before some moron dies because they watched some fake crap on YouTube. Seriously, do not try this at home.

For fuks sake... I know it is called "dry ice" but it really is CO2... You don't breathe CO2 nor live off of CO2. Even if there is alcohol vapour, you will quickly die inhaling CO2 off a hookah.

I could maybe see liquid nitrogen, or one of those electronic ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, that could work. But come on. Inhaling 100% CO2 from a hose??!!

I'm going to downvote on the grounds this video could actually get someone hurt.

no need to get all alarmist there, joe! co2 is actually being used in studies as a potential treatment for sleep apnea! co2 is virtually harmless ... as anyone knows, a pound of dry ice sublimates into 8.3 cubic feet of co2 ... those boys used no where near one pound of dry ice.

further more ... carbon dioxide pellets when submerged in ethanol-water solution undergo rapid sublimation, releasing gaseous mixture of aerosolized ethanol with the sublimated co2 acting as a submersion medium. Subsequent inhalation results in diffusion across vascular membrane and direct uptake of the ethanol.

oh no .... we better all stop drinking carbonated bevers such as soda and beer ... sparkling wine .... even pop rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How fast can one get alcohol poisoning? Usually one will get sick from drinking and stop...usually. With this method, one could overdose in a couple of minutes.

that's actually a more reasonable question, swampgirl ... minus getting nauseous, you would still have the same effects from inhaling alcohol versus drinking it. inhaling only gets the alcohol into your bloodstream faster ... as it takes some times for absorption (20% in the stomach and 80% in the small intestines).

i would say for the avg person 0.20BAC is drunk as a skunk ... anything after that is really dangerous. all depends on your tolerance ... there have been cases of death due to alcohol poisoning anywhere from 0.30BAC up to 0.60BAC!!

Ok.. so 8.3 ft^3 is only.. say 235L.. or about 60 lungs worth of deep inhaling of an average adult male. So even if you are talking about 0.1 lb or less of dry ice.. I'm pretty sure it is enough to lead to asphyxiation. How many hookah drags of CO2 before you pass out. You are basically holding your breathe. Sure, if you breathed normally in between hitting the hookah, you probably would be fine.. more likely, you would pass out first and not suffer any damage.. But sucking on a hose of CO2 is not good for you.

Is the sort of person who wants to inhale alcohol going to think to do this in a ventilated area? What happens when they pass out in a room with ever higher concentrations of CO2 in the air? I can't believe people don't see the danger in inhaling pure CO2, drunk.

Geez ladybug, I can't believe your virtually harmless comment. I almost dropped this, but the more I think about it.. the crazier it is.

From wikipedia:
Carbon dioxide content in fresh air varies and is between 0.03% (300 ppm) to 0.06% (600 ppm), depending on location and in exhaled air approximately 4.5%. When inhaled in high concentrations (greater than 5% by volume), it is immediately dangerous to the life and health of plants, humans and other animals. The current threshold limit value (TLV) or maximum level that is considered safe for healthy adults for an 8-hour work day is 0.5% (5000 ppm). The maximum safe level for infants, children, the elderly and individuals with cardio-pulmonary health issues would be significantly less.

These figures are valid for carbon dioxide supplied in "pure" form. In indoor spaces occupied by humans the carbon dioxide concentration will also reach a level higher than in pure outdoor air. Concentrations higher than 1000 ppm will cause discomfort in more than 20% of occupants, and the discomfort will increase with increasing CO2 concentration. The discomfort will be caused by various gases coming from human respiration and perspiration, and not by CO2 itself. At 2000 ppm will the majority of occupants feel a significant degree of discomfort, and many will develop nausea and headache. The CO2 concentration between 300 and 2500 ppm is used as an indicator of indoor air quality in spaces polluted by human occupation.

Acute carbon dioxide toxicity is sometimes known as choke damp, an old mining industry term, and was the cause of death at Lake Nyos in Cameroon, where an upwelling of CO2-laden lake water in 1986 covered a wide area in a blanket of the gas, killing nearly 2000.

From MSDS
>4% by volume in the atmosphere produces labored breathing and is dangerous for even a few minutes of exposure; >12% causes rapid unconsciousness; a few hours exposure at 25% results in death.

Maybe liquid Nitrogen or helium would only be equivalent to holding your breathe.. but CO2 is toxic. So I realize one lb of dry ice in a 20ft x 20ft room is relatively harmless, but you are talking about inhaling it directly over the course of however long you are hitting the hookah. That is going to be way over an average intake of 3000ppm. Now you might argue that when breathing normal air in between hitting the hookah, you are dispelling a lot of excess CO2, but I think your blood is getting elevated toxic levels during the hose sucking parts.

unbelieveably stupidly dangerous thing to do. Someone is sure to get a darwin award for attempting this eventually. I also VERY highly doubt that the BAC readings they got were even within an order of magnitude of being accurate. the morons didn't consider the fact that the meter only reads alcohol vapor content in the air blown into it and assumes that what its seeing is etoh evaporated from your blood into then out of your lungs. not the huge amount of vapor you'd be blowing into it after you just knocked back a shot (or breathed in aerosolized etoh) seconds before.
