This is a legendary performance by Anita O'day at the Newport Jazz Festival. The video is from Jazz on a Summer's Day released in 1960, but covered the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.

One of the finest singers to emerge from the swing era, Anita O'Day at her prime was a masterful scat singer and a true improviser whose interpretations of standards uplifted and altered even the most familiar songs. - From Jazz

Nice video.
Strange how the crowd just sat there in seats, must be a relaxing way to watch a concert.

Crap I was hoping no one would notice that.

This actually has to do with the production of Jazz on a Summer's Day. The film was shot but when in editing they realized they didn't have enough crowd reaction shots, so they mixed a bunch of them from random places and shot some of themselves watching the first cut.

Thats why it's so uneven in places.

I was puzzled by the crowd as well but LOVE the hats and gloves on the gals. It's funny to see everyone smoking too! Looks like it was a real scorcher and yet Anita looks so incredibly cool in every sense of the word.
