Animals on Google Earth

Not a fake. Most of Africa has extremely low resolution, except for small areas of incredible resolution. Just poking around on my own one day I found a small village, with some laundry laid out to dry, and a man standing in a courtyard.

And I've found the elephants myself too.

Although I do see the same shadow of plane in a few of the shots.

I imagine someone on safari took these pictures on a sightseeing tour and noted the locations on the plane's GPS and sent them into Google earth.

Not fake, it's part of the National Geographic featured content, and yes they are not satellite imagery they are taken from aircraft.

If you want to make it a little easier to find the areas covered, in Google Earth under Layers expand "Featured Content" then expand "National Geographic Magazine", then check the box next to the little red airplane where it says "Africa Megaflyover", then zoom in on Africa and you'll see lots of little red airplanes all over the place.

Zoom in on the areas with the red airplanes to find the imagery, or click on them for more information & links.
