Teen Shot Dead for Being Black -- White Shooter Not Arrested

Ana Kasparian loses her shit over this. She also talks a lot of sense about it.

Makes me lose my shit too, but you can't see that in the video.

Personally, this makes me hate gated communities more than anything. Forget racism. Gated communities are just breeding grounds for that type of mentality that says anyone who doesn't look or act or makes as much money as us is suspicious or bad.

When you live in a community like that...you ARE in the bubble, you're out of touch, you're not a participant in the daily trials and struggles of the rest of the world.

To me this really isn't about racism, sure there is an undercurrent of racism, but IMO it's mostly about the evils that happen when someone is given power without the maturity to use it wisely.

I googled the incident and one thing TYT appears to have left out is that reports do seem to indicate that the two guys had a fight before the shooting so it wasn't like the neighborhood watch guy just casually strolled up and shot him for no reason.

Still though. Neighborhood watch guy was armed, kid wasn't and I highly doubt there was any threat serious enough to warrant self defense with fatal results.

One thing I was surprised to learn from the other article was that the neighborhood watch guy was only 28. I have to admit, I assumed it was some crusty, bitter old man.

Oh, and the cops lied about the murderer's police record:

Zimmerman, who is white, has not been charged in the death of Martin, who was black. Police in Sanford, where the shooting occurred, told Martin’s family that Zimmerman had a “squeaky-clean” record and that’s why they had not arrested him, according to Tracy Martin, the teen’s father.

Crump said public records show that Zimmerman was arrested in Orange County in 2005 on charges of resisting arrest with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer.

“They just lied to the family,” Crump said. “They just couldn’t see why [Zimmerman] would do anything wrong or be violent. But not only do you know the guy killed this kid, because he admitted to it, you knew that he has a propensity for violence because of his past record.”

What must a white man do to get arrested in this town???

I am a little rusty people, is that blatant racism itself or what ? Or is that just a fucking douchebag thing to say ? Puting a sarcasm shroud around that doesnt detract from the sentiments it portrays. Like I said I am not sure.

What the shit!? Zimmerman should have been arrested on the spot, if I lived there I wouldn't want armed moron like this watching my neighborhood. But what do I know, I live in a state where you can run a guy down and then get away with it just because you're the wife of a sports celeb.

>> ^longde:

The fact that a skittles-toting teen was killed and the fact that the murderer has not been arrested is totally about race.

I'm not disagreeing that race played a heavy role in the shooting. I'm just saying that had that NOT been in a gated community, this wouldn't have happened.

But because it was in a gated community, shit like racism is ALLOWED to fester so that Zimmerman probably built himself up into thinking that he is the law of that particular corner of the universe and the kid had the "audacity" to be an unknown element in Zimmerman's universe.

In any other typical neighborhood that isn't blocked off from the rest of the world, you get used to the idea of people who look different walking by every so often. The guy would still probably be a racist asshole, but he wouldn't have felt empowered to "lay down the law" to the poor kid.

Also, if it wasn't in a gated community, I guarantee you that he would have been arrested.

How do you think racism starts in the first place? The unknown is feared. The rest of the world eventually has to face that unknown, but when you're gated off, you never have to, and racism is allowed to happen.

It's both racism and douchebag. I guess we should call it doucheism.

Porksandwichsays...

Guessing Zimmerman is from a powerful family in that area. Because it could just as easily be about which family has more strings to pull.

If the teenager were white, wealthy but not as wealthy as 28 year olds family.....cops wouldn't do shit to the guy especially if his family had ties to high up police force, etc and he could make some halfway credible claim that everyone could grab hold of and use like a shield to respond to all questions.

Ice tea in his pocket = bulge thought to be gun....he said something, reached for his pocket and I defended myself.

Should look into more than one angle than just the race angle. Yes, the black/white situation is one possibly explanation, but I don't think it totally explains it. Unless where this took place white people are still living with the "white is right" mentality, and if they were..black family in their paid for gated neighborhood would not be going over well with that crowd. In which case, they would have more ammo to use against the police department.

And the fact that the guy called the cops and didn't stay in his fucking house when approaching a guy who was not actively trying to break into a house or car.......I just think something other than race related stuff is going on. I suspect a family who lives above the law as a rule in that area, guy probably could have shot an old granny dead on her own yard with no witnesses and not been taken in.

hpqpsays...

The last argument, of reversing roles, was the most important one to make imo. It really clinches the fact that this is crime ear-deep in racism. I hope not only Zimmerman but the cops who let him walk get prosecuted.

Yogisays...

If I had killed someone...even on accident with a gun and I knew their family lived NEAR me...I would be begging the cops to put me in Jail. Seriously how is this guy still alive?! If someone killed my son he'd be dead, I wouldn't give a fuck I'd find a way.

Yeah fuck it I'm advocating vigilantism...we can't get justice so lets start killing cops and criminals. Lets all be Fucking Batman.

It should be legal for the family to go gun down this asshole's entire family now.

That is wrong thinking.

Run down the guy = fair play.

Run down his family = new, innocent victims. (plus you open yourself up to having your own family run down by "rights" of your own logic).

True. Perhaps it's not legally justified or morally right, but at least you cut the plant down at the root and keep that bad seed from spreading.

Does anybody have any updates to this story? I think it's absolutely absurd that the guy wasn't arrested IMMEDIATELY. Just discharging a weapon within city limits gets you arrested, even if there's no evidence of a crime. How the fuck does this dude get away with murder? Is this a small town where he is buds with the chief of police or something?

My parents live in a gated community. They don't understand why I find the whole concept repulsive. It's all about fear of the "other", race, class, age, religion or whatever. We do live in Canada so one can be reasonably sure of not being shot by the neighbours, even if the mentality is the same.

This incident still fits the definition of classic racism- it's hard to imagine the kid being dead if he were white.

So if I don't have a record I can shoot black people? I can't follow any of this logic...I have to go lie down for awhile cause this is depressing.

And by that logic you can kill everyone and therefore be the most prolific serial-killer of all time, charged with nothing. "He was coming right at us!!!"...

This makes me sick.

Poor because the title focused more on Ana Kasparian's mood than on the egregious matter of a black boy getting shot to death for being black. The title was a cheap populist move on my part, and I've changed it. Thanks for calling me out on that Peroxide.>> ^VoodooV:

I just don't want to believe that this is the way it is being presented. I wonder if there is any record of how bad the fight was before the shooting happened? I mean, if Z. was getting his ass kicked and when they showed up he had broken bones and his face was all busted up, I can sort of understand, but yeah, this is just horrible the way they make it sound.

I wish we had more info...

Thus far no arrest. It's moved to the district attorney's office but that's it. According to reports Zimmerman's back was wet from the grass and had blood coming from his nose and the back of his head, indicating there was some kind of fight. However : its a 28 year old dude vs a junior in high school. Really? Self defense? The kid played football but even with pads on he wasn't that big. Self Defense is a pathetic excuse.

How can you even bring up self defense if you put yourself in the situation by following the kid after the cops tell you not to... I just don get it... I cannot believe he hasn't stepped foot inside a cell by now like any other person in that situation would have if it were in any other town.

I think the point of this story is that this is a fairly commonplace occurrance, part of daily life in the world of a black male in America, especially the South. In other words, maybe it isn't all that surprising that Z hasn't spent a day in prison nor even at a police station, and THAT's the problem.>> ^cyberwire:
