The very low flying Air Force One backup plane circled the Manhattan financial district three times for an air force photo shoot.
Authorities were not allowed to inform the public beforehand.
Panic ensued.

Other footage of this here and here

I'd say this was truly in BAD TASTE!
There is no reason whatsoever why they couldn't have notified the press ahead of time of this. It's not like a president was on board so there was no security concerns.

Widespread panic, Another way the government uses fear to sell their ideals. Keep reminding the people and keep them scared. More like "US government continues to inflict fear and terrorize it's own people...."

I'm getting pissed off now, so I'll quit!

...for a photo shoot?

...WHY??

So you could compare how similar it would look from other air crafts that have whizzed through New York City's Skyline at dangerously low altitudes?

Jesus what the hell were they thinking???

They couldn't have done this in New Jersey instead?

"You can't fly there!"

I don't understand what any of you are complaining about - obviously, there was careful cost/benefit analysis involved in the planning:

Avg cost of what, 20 man-hours of pro-Photoshopping?
Roughly $3000 (it's a single plane against cloudy background, c'mon).

Avg cost of several hours' VC-25 fuel + crew salary + scaring millions of people to death?
Priceless.

Best PR move of all time.

A big group of people, actually thought it would be a good idea, to fly a 747 in a low flight over New York.

And alerting the public beforehand would have been some kind of treason, a risk to national security.

Seriously, you can't make this stuff up.

I could have photoshopped Air force One with the Statue of Liberty for significantly less.

what's the problem? just a plane innocently being chased by a couple of f-16s over manhattan. i don't see how that could be misinterpreted.

they must have been doing something else.. testing something? recreating scenario?

maybe they were taking footage for the historical archives... of how the air force, under bush, chased off the new york planes.... and that osama obama bombed the buildings himself later!

I work right by Miramar Air Station. I'm worried when I don't tactical see air stunts. With that being said, I can understand why they (of all cities) would be a little skiddish.

I think having military jets trailing around the plane was a nice touch. They should've blasted some air rade sirens in morse code to let the people of NY know that it was just a drill, while they're at it.

Things To Do If I Am President:

-Find a Vice President capable of amusing gaffes that rival even Ford and Quayle

I think it's funny that if it was under Bush's presidency, rougy's comment would turn into something to the degree of "only a dumbass Repub would think of doing something like this." Since he can't criticize his own party because he's a sheepdog, he can only muster a forced insult along the lines of: "well, those Repub... bystanders want... torture! I tell you!" Honestly, why are you so hopelessly stuck on this left vs right nonsense? They're practically the same BS, yet you worship Democrats after Vietnam, the Clinton stock market bubble, Clinton's repeal of Glass-Steagall, the condoning of the same Fed policies and government expansions?

I don't really see the big deal here, it's not like the planes were buzzing the buildings or something, they were still safely above everything. Perhaps it was poorly thought out by whoever planned it, but I find it far more upsetting that almost 10 years later and people are still so paranoid that they actually ran in terror of a plane flying overhead. It just seems that whenever anything involving, referring to, or resembling 9/11 occurs, peoples logic just goes out the window. We've edited movies, vastly altered airport security to frustrating heights, and apparently developed a phobia of planes flying any lower that cruising altitude.

Considering the point of terrorist attacks is to disrupt daily life and cause "terror", I would have to say that they definitely accomplished their goal.

Good thing we're involved in two wars so we can all feel so safe that we still flee in terror when a plane flys overhead.

Oh boy, I can't wait to see the pics they got of this jetliner! I'll probably buy the poster, put it up next to my posters of a barge and a cement truck.

If they took it at high enough resolution you can probably even make out people being trampled!

I understand from the article that this was the spare plane. So what is this or the first choice plane called when Obama is elsewhere?

Much ado about nothing IMO. A low flying jumbo in a major metropolis being tailed by a fighter jet is going to freak people out. Nothing happened though. Get over it.

Louis Caldera's stupidity is a national insult. Such lack of judgement makes him extremely unreliable in any position as a decision maker.

NYTimes:
Louis E. Caldera, director of the White House Military Office, who served in the Clinton administration as secretary of the Army, said in a statement:

"Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision. While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it’s clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused."

This is the 4th unannounced flyover in NY since 9/11.

The best thing about this video is that the terrified people are running in the same direction as the plane.

If it had been a real attack, it would have been an extremely sad fact, but since it was a photo op, I'll allow myself to laugh(I wanted to say 'chuckle' but that's really only for level 36 mages).

That was low? Must be no airports around. Down at the shopping complex you can see kids pick their nose through the plane windows as they pass over.

Anywhere but where the plane is moving too. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were tunneled with PTSD.
