....I don't know why so many folks voted for this, but no one has left any comments..
Here's my take on why-Because so many upvotes came from folks who know that this really IS the best way to deal with ADD-
What is ADD? I believe it is a combination of factors related to diet and socialization in the US from the late fifties. Short, television edits, (MTV is notorious), shitty fast foods, and the pace of society, has created an imprint scenario, that affects certain genetic predispositions, and fucks a natural process up.
Then, of course, here come the pharmaceutical companies, with their solution....addiction to amphetamines....
The only thing you can do to adjust without the drug, is to keep yourself in check, and aware, always...
The pain aversion therapy technique, described here, needs to be administered to parents, who, thinking they are in love, have kids, without the first clue of what to do once they drop...I embrace my ADD-and self medication is always superior to goofball
scripts....and believe me, if ya think corporal punnishment should never be used, you will always wonder why this world becomes more and more frightening and dangerous to live in......

Amen choggie. As usual, SP strikes at the heart of the matter. Getting kids of their unhealthy diets and excersizing direct and loving discipline is definitely the right direction. SP just takes it further, and makes it funny.

LMAO omg I forgot about this episode. Unfortunately this is a "black & white" solution and is never that simple. SP just takes it to the extreme. In today's PC world of worrying about offending and damaging the minds of the future.. sometimes I think its better to just say F**K IT and do what worked for me. I got a paddle across my bare ass - and I learned that if I did something wrong - don't get caught or I'll get my ass beat. Erm.. that didn't come out right.

Among parents and educators this is still a very heated topic. I attempted to read up on the topic, but the books I read only made matters murkier. I taught art to “talented” high school kids for a few years.

I think every once in awhile people need to be "roughed up." If they don't want it to happen again, they will do their work and not make a fuss.

....most of the world is, severly pussified, and this diseases' most glaring symtom is Passive Aggression-

Afraid of confrontation, the void is filled with a supine, inactive form of communicating...a weak, bullshit action perpetration, without words....empowerment coming from the idea that we are insulated from consequences of our actions or inaction.....DO YOU HAVE THIS DISEASE???? HMMMMMMMMM?

HEY DOTDUDE....yeah the experts love to convalude the murky terrains they pontificate upon...I was diagnosed "hyperactive" in the 70's, before the pharmagods decided how they were going to market the dosing of the children,-they had one drug, Ritalin....gave it to me and I passed clean out on the smallest dose....

We have this one twit at work who constantly goofs off and messes around, doesn't do his job, very immature -- and who has made it known that he has ADD, which is supposed to be his excuse. What's mindblowing is that other people parrot it in his defense: "you know he's got ADD, right?" Great, lack of personal responsibility is now an illness and a viable cop-out.

The fuck it doesn't. Any of the kids around my neighborhood acted stupid and they got a slap on the legs... seriously....... no one had ADD 20 years ago, now suddenly everyone has it.

I could accept that perhaps a few people have some sort of hormonal imbalance and perhaps are warranting some kind of treatment, but perhaps only 1 in 1000 of the people today who "have ADD". And in the past, the slap on the legs would have made the "condition" half as bad.

Imagine eating lucky charms and cheetohs all day, sitting in front of a TV playing video games for hours on end, not getting enough exercise, and then being deprived of enough sleep every night.

Now try to sit at a desk for 6 hours and focus. Whoopsie, you've got ADHD.

When I was young, my mother fed us oatmeal and eggs for breakfast. For lunch we had a BP&J, an apple, and some milk. We had raw veggies as a snack, maybe 2 or 3 homemade cookies. For dinner we had beans and rice and whole wheat bread with a little meat. We rarely had dessert. She made sure we played outside and got plenty of physical activity. When we stayed inside, we didn't have video games and tv wasn't an option. We played with legos and GI Joes. My dad tucked us into bed at 8:00pm sharp after we read for a half hour. When we stepped out of line, we suffered consequences.

Lazy parents cause ADD.

Try watching TV consciously and with the sound muted. Some programs are crazy. Flash flash flash goes the cuts, 5 in a second at least. And I don't even watch MTV...

It's natural, when we are subjected to this sort of information flow our brains get used to it. They adapt to it and we get kids who think everything else is boring.

Lazy parents cause ADD.

I'd like to expand that statement if I could.

ADD is a real physiological disorder, as are ADHD, Bi-Polar Disorder, and Asperger's syndrome; 4 of the more popular disorders that unruly kids are diagnosed with nowadays. I have 2 nieces who have been diagnosed bi-polar, one of my nephews has been diagnosed with aspergers, three of my cousins were ADD growing up, and my Brother-in-law was ADHD, and I will be the first to tell you that none of them suffer from the disorders they were diagnosed with. They were all victims of lousy parents and lazy doctors. Parents don't want to accept the blame for their out of control kids, and the doctors don't want to set them straight and tell them they raised little assholes(plus they enjoy the kick backs from the pharmaceutical companies for all the drugs they hand out).

That all being said I think it's unfortunate that this has become so common because it marginalizes the kids who really do suffer from these illnesses, kids who need extra support and understanding in order to overcome their conditions and succeed in the world.

ADD really is a destructive phenomenon. I know a girl who suffered from it for years before finally getting diagnosed at age 19. She's an excellent student with nearly a 4.0 average, with a tremendous work ethic. Nonetheless, her thought processes were erratic, her attention span was flighty, and she had difficulty managing her emotions.

Once she got diagnosed, though, and figured out the proper medication, everything evened out. She can now spend less time studying and get the same results. She managed to get control of her life and her emotions, and broke up with the manipulative bastard of a boyfriend who exploited her emotional vulnerability to soothe his own ego.

She was lucky enough to finally get diagnosed.

ADD is certainly overdiagnosed. But that doesn't mean it's a fake disorder.
