99 Balloons

Eliot was born with an undeveloped lung, a heart with a hole in it and DNA that placed faulty information into each and every cell of his body. However, that could not stop the living God from proclaiming Himself through this boy who never uttered a word.

why do i automatically find other people's attribution of their beliefs (as cause and effect for things) so distasteful? its a fucking video about a sick kid, but all i want to do is scream "its not god its medicine and doctors and education and a little luck saving this kid".

what the hell is my problem.

im glad your organism that you pieced together by shooting DNA at each other is still functional.

thats as sincere as i can get. how lame.

im totally going to carmelize some onions this weekend.

Why the h8, since everything is just atoms drifting thru the cosmos, nothing matters; so assigning significance to something that has no significance, and then getting all worked up about it, seems hypocritical.

totally fu*ked baby born, the 'miracle' of childbirth. thank you god, thanks for this wonderful fu*ked baby you've given us!

(99 days later) - oh thank you god, thank you for killing our baby eventually and taking him to heaven! thank you so much! our lives have been fulfilled so much by your intervention.

What a miracle that the doctors were willing to submit to their request to extend this child's suffering for the perverse pleasure of being able to thank god for the miraculous extension of this child's suffering.

"You got your first cordless pictures today. No feeding tube, oxygen, or stickers, this was no small accomplishment, but we got it done"

Two days later...

"Dear Elliot, today you went to be with Jesus"

This is so sad, but not just for the usual reasons.

rottenseedsays...

Dear Elliot, be thankful you died so young. You didn't have to experience what would probably be a miserable existence under the fear of a being that doesn't exist or under the wrath of those who believe in it.

Am I really the only one who was practically completely sure the description was intentionally sarcastic - "that could not stop the living God from proclaiming Himself through this boy who never uttered a word." and then had this huge WTF moment when the 'dad' actually said it?

I mean come on, it's so absurdly accurate in illustrating the delusion at work here I couldn't have put the *Terrible in this story from my anti-theist perspective more eloquently than he did. The baby didn't exemplify a 'miracle from god' whichever way one tries to look at it and it's completely ludicrous that someone would actually think that was the case, let alone the parents.

okay, I'm an atheist, but I can't understand the harsh comments on here.

As far as allowing the child to live as long as they did, well, they probably didn't find out about his defects until it was too late for an abortion (not that they would've considered it, but I'm just making a point), and infanticide is just as illegal as euthanasia -- so there's no reason to blame the parents for the possibility of prolonged suffering.

There's also no reason to believe the child was suffering the whole time. The parents obviously spent the entirety of those 99 days completely focused on taking care of him as best possible.

I have no problem with the fact that they interpreted their experience through their faith. If it helps them to heal, than fine.

Now as an atheist, the way I interpret this is the remarkable capacity humans (have obtained from millions of years of evolution) have to love and care for children. The video was very touching and sad, but also beautiful.

As far as the beliefs of the parents, they really didn't specify, so for all we know they are moderate Christians, and not the extremist types. And in no way did they imply that his death was a miracle. I may not believe in miracles, but if they chose to believe that the time they spent with their child was a miracle, than fine. It doesn't mean that they're not aware of the contributions of medical science.

Sagemindsays...

Thanks for the positive reaction to this vid.
Regardless of the religious orientation of the parents, this video is well made, clearly stated and made with love for a child that was not long for this world. The parents put a lifetime of emotions into the lifespan of this child. They knew he wasn't going to live long so they made every minute count and cherished every single day he was in their lives and this world!

I don't see how thanking (any) god for the time they were given with Eliot can be a horrible thing. They clearly were changed by the experience as were all their friends and family. If someone wants to pass their grief to their god so they can carry on and deal, who are we to criticize?

I think sometimes people can be jaded by the extremist people in religion and forget that in a lot of cases, religion is the only crutch, emotionally holding some people together. It gives them faith and strength to hold on and get past the hard times. Now, I struggle with religion myself, but I can't lay a blame on these people for using a religion to give them strength during this trial of life. If you have never lost a child, or struggled through a life changing trauma, think about it.
