I remember when this ad came out. Good stuff. And I have to say, getting my Monster 3D card and loading up glQuake is one of my all time great gaming moments. It's crazy how impressive those graphics seemed, especially looking at them today.

Heh - I remember this moment as well for myself. My first openGL moment was on a Viper330 playing Quake II. Seeing the difference was incredible.

My first openGL moment was Tomb Raider on the PC, followed shortly by glquake. The BEST time ever gaming had to be Quake-2 with dual Voodoo-2's pushing 1024x768 in SLI mode. Loved it Loved it loved it!! Thats where "Deathcow" was born, in Tokays Towers and the Warehouse and The Edge. TEN YEARS and SIX DAYS AGO my friends, Quake 2.... God it was so good.

OH yeah! I had a pair of 3dfx cards in SLI! I went to gaming conf and all the locals were hanging around my rig cuz I had the 60+fps at 1024x768 on Unreal and Quake 2... pffft.

Diamond Monster 3D was my first video card with Quake 1!

Same here. A Diamond Monster 3D on glQuake. Unfortunately, just 3-4 months before that, I had bought a VFX-1 helmet for $800 and was playing Quake 1 in VR. Why I say "unfortunately" was the fact the VFX would only support 640x480x256 and we all know the Monster 3D required 16-bit to run. While the VR stuff was a gimmick, it was pretty damn cool to actually play Quake (and it's expansion packs) in a true 3D environment. hhehehe

Oh well, technology marches on!

Ha! I didn't even know they made ads.

Oh, 3dfx, how amazing you were in the day... how quickly you actually fell. Quite sad.

But I thank you for the gaming world we have now and the Nvidia 8800 in my machine now

Oh yes... I think 'viral' is not correct for this, being that
a) it was made for tv
b) the company doesn't exist any more

So, how exactly would it be viral then?

we have very loose/contradictory/aggravating standards when it comes to the viral tag on the sift. Invariably, if I post a TV commercial and intentionally leave off the viral tag, one of the first posts will be somebody invoking a viral tag. If I add the viral tag, invariably, there will be someone saying it isn't really viral because X and Y.

My standard is, if my Mom saw it on TV, it isn't viral.

Woo! I still remember my Voodoo 1! With the cable to hook it to the other video card because no VGA adaptor. Just pure, raw 3D power. Awesome.

There was a really awesome and trippy screen saver that used it. And Tomb Raider. That's all I can remember at the moment, but man that was a SWEET screensaver.

Oh, maybe magic carpet?

I remember one of my first investments in building a PC that was to be used solely by me and funded completely out of my pocket was a 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 AGP video card. That thing was massive! I guess the equivalent to it today would be the GeForce 7950GT. It had 2 video chips with 32MB of buffer each and was one of the first cards to tout FSAA plus some T-Buffer effects that, sadly, didn't get taken advantage of. Before this beast I was running on a Voodoo3 2000 PCI card in a hand-me-down Comcrap PC. I picked that card up just so I could play Half Life and Unreal Tournament. Oh, those were the days.

Oh I loved my Moster3D!
I saved up all my money and put it into my shoe. On the way to buy the thing, in the middle of the crowed street, two guys and a girl pushed up against me, and told me to give them my money. One of them showed me a gun. What!, could they tell from the look on my face that I had $300 in my shoe? I kept walking, and ducked into a restaurant. The owner let me out the back - money safe in my shoe. For obvious reasons, I went home instead of continuing on to buy the Monster3D, but when I did go the next day, there was some sort of grand opening celebration at the store, and Thresh was there playing Quake. I was amazed! I'd never see anyone play like that! I bought the card, changed my keyboard config to match his, and blissfully wasted the next few years of my life on Team Fortress.

Quake 2 was my first 3d-accelerated moment, on a Voodoo1 4MB in March 1998.

Deathcow, those 3 maps you mention (Edge, Warehouse, Tokay's Towers) were pretty much the only maps I was interested in playing.

DJsunkid, is "Drempels" the screensaver you're thinking of?

glQuake, 640x480. Transparent water. Man them were the days. Then Quake 2 had support out of the box and us 3D'ers got coloured lighting! Awesome!
