2016 Olympics: What Rio Doesn’t Want The World To See

The 2016 Olympics are set to begin in just over a month in Rio de Janeiro. As the city prepares to receive an influx of international visitors, it is building new infrastructure and transportation systems to accommodate the surge. But the city is also undergoing another major project: hiding and removing poor people from view of foreign onlookers. I went to Rio to see how the city is transforming to make way for the Olympics

They could have given all those less-fortunate, now evicted people so much money, and still made off like bandits themselves. I just don't understand the oppression and hate.

Probably because the wealthy just see them as being undeserving free riders. As it is I bet there was a lot of grumbling when the planners finally gave in and allowed those 20 families to stay where they were but felt they had to give them new houses or risk looking bad. Not to mention that shanty towns don't do much for property values.

They did the same thing in China, they did the same thing in Russia. I'm not aware of any 'rich-washing' that was done in Vancouver but there may have been some here. They definitely promised that a lot of the housing they built would be for low-income renters and now the Olympics is over high price tags have been put on the units and they've gone to solely the rich.

Didn't they do the same thing in China when they hosted the Olympics?

Paybacksays...

The rich washing in Vancouver has been going on for decades. They didn't have to do much.

like payback said, vancouver has been "rich washing" for decades. i've heard some crazy stories from expo 88 era. before the olympics they cracked down on the poor. often ostensibly rounding them up and sending them to the suburbs (this is fairly normal procedure for cops who "catch" binners/panhandlers in richer areas: they "arrest" them, drive them out to the suburbs, and just leave them there).
