Oh, that was nicely played by the editing/directing team... get his sob story (fair enough too, kids can be right pricks to those who don't 'conform'), get you on side for the kid, and then have him sing like that, and show a lot of reactions to let you know you're supposed to be amazed (kind of a sense of 'you're allowed, go on... you know you want to cry')...

Yeah... worked... almost welled up on that one.

This is why these shows work, these aren't 'reality' shows, they are old school talent contests. Sure they overlay all sorts of modern 'reality' drama on top of it these days, but at their core, they're talent contests, and that's a pretty pure form of entertainment.

Won a talent show once-at a cannery in Seward AK, end o' season party-it was two drum solos on the bands borrowed equipment, a comedian, and me and another guy, in dresses from the thrift store, slapping each other with humpies to some Turkish-Armenian muzac from the twenties.....the judging was settled by audience applause, an easy hundred bucks....they had to come stop us because the fish scraps were flying on the band's gear-I was told not to return for employment the next, or any season-

You notice the kid doesn't close his lips when he sings? Weird.

They better hurry up with the shows production. By the time he makes it to the finals he's going to sing like Johnny Cash.
