No Country For Old Men - The Ending Scene
This is the way I took it, Rasch (not that you're still confused).

Ed Tom (TLJ) has decided on retirement rather than bringing the killer to justice. He found the killer but he retires because he realizes that Texas is essentially No Country for Old Men. So he tells his wife about a dream: heading into snowy, dangerous mountains on horseback and his father carrying fire, goes on ahead of him to await him.

This idea of father & son carrying fire is also explored in The Road, McCarthy's follow-up to NCFOM, as the man and the boy seek to establish their place in the overwhelming bleakness of their existence.

The Sheriff knows he's outmatched by this new kind of evil (Bardem) and since he's older now than his father ever was, the dream is kind of an acceptance of his retirement, a "letting-go" of this hazardous job so he can follow the fire of his father. Perhaps he feels he owes it to his father to continue to survive, since he's older.

Like Bob Dylan said, "Momma, take this badge offa me, ... I feel I'm knockin on heaven's door."

What if Earth had rings like Saturn?
^ Very cool.

Far as science discovery goes, I like to think the inhabitants of a ringed Earth would have shed any "flat earth" ideas far far earlier than we did and I think the reason is obvious. It would also have been a simple matter to show how large and how far away the rings were. Plus, I believe man would have done anything it took to see how far the rings go, which would have led to an accelerated shipbuilding craft, which would have led to accelerated human expansion, etc, etc.

On the other hand, I can also see religious forces using it to incite a more potent fear, which would likely have tempered the above.

Oh, I love this.

What if Earth had rings like Saturn?
Can you imagine how different our religions might have been if they had to explain rings? Zeus might've been second fiddle to this new Lord of the...no, I'm not going to do that. It's beneath me.

But seriously, imagine cavemen trying to make sense of it. Or the Romans. Or Kepler. Our entire theology, science, and society might be vastly different. We might have been more advanced in a "ringed" 2009. Or a ringed 2009 might look like 1940. Who knows for sure? Fascinating to think about.

Obama Bows to Japanese Emperor Akihito
>> ^Rotty:
This really isn't news worthy; obammy has already demostrated that he's a diplomatic moron. What, no iPod for Akihito?

There are more relevant reasons to slam this Banker boy:

1) No immediate plans to leave Iraq. What happened to the nine month plan?
2) Additional deployments to Afghanastan; more dead Americans fighting the elite's wars.
3) Filling his admnistration with the same thugs that have consistently corrupted and looted America.
4) Other than banker bailouts, he hasn't done SHIT for the economy.
5) No changes in banking regulations that led to the last economic meltdown.
6) Other than creating a few thousnad jobs in his native state, he hasn't done SHIT in creating jobs.

As a matter of fact, other than touring the planet, he hasn't done a fucking thing.

The only CHANGE he's interested in is the change in your pocket.

If you cut out the diplomacy slam and all the childish name calling, I would have to agree with much of this fellow's post.

The bank bailout is a moot point because anyone in office would have bailed them out. Maybe not Ron Paul, but certainly McCain! After all, Bush bailed out Bear Sterns in Feb 2007 and McCain did whatever Bush did so...there you go.

I voted for Obama because he said he'd...

1) end the war,
2) go after those that committed war crimes (admittedly, Biden said this not Obama, but still)
3) not have any lobbyist on his cabinet (for the post of Deputy Secretary of Defense he nominated William J. Lynn III, the top lobbyist for Raytheon, one of the biggest companies in the military-industrial complex)
4) follow the rule of law. Meanwhile, the suspension of habeas corpus is still in effect for many "enemy combatants" and warrantless wiretaps at the NSA are still going like the energizer bunny.

He has done some good things. He at least tried to introduce a public healthcare option (it's unfortunately DOA on the Senate floor), he reversed some environmental policies, and, well, he's not Bush. But that's not really enough for me.

Downvote this comment if you like but everything I've pointed out is the truth.

Nostradamus 2012 End Time
Nostrildamus is the whipping boy for all cataclysmic or otherwise newsworthy scenarios. Just check how many books have been written since WWII. He supposedly predicted Hitler, the bombing of Japan, Kennedy's assassination, Nixon's resignation, the fall of Phenom Pen, the Falklands conflict, the Challenger Shuttle disaster, Y2K, 9/11, George Bush, the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster, Obama, and now 2012.

And guess what? His prose will be used to "predict" all the cataclysms and newsworthy items of the future too. Why? Because it sells books and makes for entertainment fodder. No other reason than that.

Remember that Y2K TV movie? It was shite, yes, but it provided jobs for quite a few people in the TV industry. Same with this new Emmerich flick. Same with all disaster movies, political biopics, polemic documentaries, and "uncovered secrets" books that we have not yet seen. We're creative, you see, and we demand to be entertained.

Rather than register to the umpteen-thousand conspiracy message boards currently out there, I'd very much like to frequent a single, official 2012 message board, expressly for rational thinkers' postings of "We're still here, morons."

Because I'm exactly the kind of person who says "I told you so."

Rockslide at the Ocoee (Rte 64 in TN) caught on video
I'm a yankee-born southerner as well. Born in NY, live in Atlanta. Been in the south since '94 and many times, I still can't understand what the hell they're talking about.

My favorite is when someone from the carolinas goes to change the oil in their car. They'll pronounce "oil" as though it rhymed with "girl". "I gotta change the earl in my coor." It's too fuckin' funny.

How can anyone be taken seriously with such a goofy accent? Admittedly, I've got a prejudicial problem with that but...come on! It's just plain silly.

Digital forensics shows Oswald photo was not faked
Not bad. It would have been better if he'd been able to dynamically alter the angle of the light source in his 3D model. Like, drag the sun higher & lower...here's what the shadows look like at 5:00 pm, here's what they look like at high noon...allowing us to see that, yes, the body and nose shadows fall correctly. Capice?

I don't have a problem with this idea of keeping such an oath. Matthews is being sensationalistic here.
