Poor Whites of South Africa
Lets look at the stats:

As of 2007, comparatively speaking white unemployment is pretty low at 4%. In the coloured demographic, which has a similar total population, unemployment is still incredibly high at 21%.

The black unemployment statistics have dropped by around 10% over the last 7 years, currently at 26%. Oddly, the coloured unemployment statistics have seen minimal shift over the same period of time, which is strange considering the Employment Equity Act covers blacks and coloureds under the same umbrella.

I'm not as interested in whats been going on with unemployed whites as much as I am interesting in the coloured unemployment stats. Even the white unemployment rate has dropped over the last 7 years.

The Employment Equity Act is far from flawless though, and it's not an efficient piece of legislation. The statistics may look good superficially, but the quality of the workforce the the EEA has created is questionable. Especially considering the governments rush to fill EEA 'quotas' without the required corresponding investment in relevant education and training to guarantee the ability of the individuals thrust into these new positions.

The annoying thing is the the only coverage South Africa seems to get in the international press is badly researched pieces like this, or something to do with Nelson Mandela.

Marxism 101
>> ^sroemerm:
@6:42 There are A bunch of different ways you could hypothesize about how to do this. The specifics are not important."

What? How you would implement socialism has everything to do with whether or not you could pull it off. The specifics are very important.

If you want specifics, a good starting point is either Michael Albert's and Professor Robin Hahnel's writings on Parecon, or David Schweickart's writings on Economic Democracy.

I agree that the specifics are important. You can't criticise a flawed economic model effectively without proposing an alternative system embodying more beneficial and balanced ideology.

Hitchens debates Iraq with Reagan Jr.
And this is the character of the entire article. As Hitchens has since pointed out, the Iraq war was not the only influence, but it is rather important to note that Gadhafi did not go to the UN, nor to Europe, but to the British and the Americans. If the Iraq war was not an influence, why are it's biggest supporters the ones that Libya went to and has handed it's weapons to?

I don't necessarily agree with Cole either, because if I just saw the world's super powers shred and spit on International law, it would compel me to make my peace offerings with them pretty quickly too.

The point still holds, it was an inane justification to even ponder invoking in defense of something as farcical as this 'war' regardless of the minutia.

After Hitchen's little waterboarding stunt I'm intrigued to see what he tackles next . . maybe he'll let himself be invaded and occupied by the U.S Military, using their 'Shocker and Awe' doctrine, and maybe then he will revise his views yet again.

Anyway, I'm going way off topic.

Hitchens debates Iraq with Reagan Jr.
A good article addressing Hitchen's claims around this time. Much of which has been recycled in this 'debate.'

Hitchen's lost his charm a long time ago.

John Taylor Gatto - State Controlled Consciousness
Great clip.

I just thought I'd contribute another book I'm busy reading because it's extremely relevant to this topic. It's called "Generation on Hold: Coming of Age in the Late Twentieth Century" by Professors James Cote & Anton Alahar.

It has some great information and statistics on the failings of mass education systems (in Canada and the U.S), and talks about the political economy and it's effect on adolescents including gender intensification, identity manipulation etc etc. It's a great read.

TPM: Wes Clark Hyperventorama!
Before McCain had presidential aspirations he was the first person to question his military record.

I am a war criminal. I bombed innocent women and children.”
John Mcain, 60 Minutes, 1997.

Also, violating the United States Military Code of Conduct isn't usually rewarded with the title of 'War Hero.'

"O.K., I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital." U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973, former POW John McCain

"Eventually, I gave them my ship's name and squadron number, and confirmed that my target had been the power plant." Page 193-194, Faith of My Fathers, John McCain.

Congrats to Wesley Clark for being blunt, and I'd love to see what John McCain's biggest critic, John McCain, has to say about Clark's allegations now.
