VideoSift 3.3 Roundtable

Yes, it's that time again- give us some ideas for VideoSift 3.3. This could be something that you feel is broken and needs to be fixed or features that you would like added. All ideas are welcome and will be considered for inclusion in our next update.
campionidelmondo says...

- Being able to change/delete votes. Would make sense to put a time limit on it, something like 72 hours after which the vote would be permanent. I've seen quite a few situations where people said they accidentally voted the wrong way so this could help.

- Possible invocations could just as well be links triggering the respective invocation. Would result in less comments and rss feed updates.

- The unique views problem jonny mentioned regarding video views seems to apply to profile views as well.

- Maybe limit the number of videos that are listed in "Top Sifts" from the same channel. Right now there are about 10 Sarah Palin videos in there. A little more variety might be nice.

rottenseed says...

I like that we confined "top comment, new sift talk posts, etc." into one box. The only problem is, I can't control this box. I think it'd be cool if I could cycle through these as I'd like to. Maybe a little "next" button that'd force the box to cycle to the next. Also, shorter top vids time (unless it's my vid)

maatc says...

- a "validate embed code" box accessible other than on the submit page (because when your queue is full it´d be a great tool to check if what you want to queue next is already there)

- more stats in general: how many videos total on the site, how many dead and so on, maybe a cast o meter that shows real time vote activity.

- I would also love to see something like a similarity meter that matches your votes with those of other members.

MarineGunrock says...

1. Top rated comments box.
2. Ability to search by channel.
3. Discard that fucking Jake video.
4. A minimum of a confirmation dialog when downvoting a video.
5. Ability to change a vote would be nice given a time frame. Many times I've voted early and then regretted it because of the last bit of video.
6. Bi-monthly blowjobs from blankfist
7. A votemerge system. Whether it's from a comment (not technically feasible, I know) or a Diamond ability to actually edit how many votes a video has - whether they be empty votes or actually tied to a sifter. Make it peer-reviewed by up to three other diamonds or an admin. There could be a link to the dupe showing where the votes came from. You guys are smart, you can think of something.
8. Anal probe Wednesdays

Eklek says...

>> ^jonny:
searching by channel

as stated before: even better when you can search in 2 or 3 or more selected channels, so one can search e.g. all dark mystery shortfilms or all parody meme comedy posts..

A really great feature would be a neighbour system (cf. last.fm)/similarity meter..

And I'm all for more/better stats!

Sarzy says...

I think I'm in the minority on this one, but bring back the requeue! Make it a button, and give it a limit of two or three.

Also, dupe detection should probably be better in the submission process. Maybe have more than five videos in the possible duplicate submission screen? I don't know, I'm not a scientist.

Also, I recall a sift talk post from a few weeks back where someone suggested having Xbox Live style achievements. That might be neat.

jonny says...

Absolutely! In fact, if it's possible to have multiple keywords in the channel selection box, how about in the submitter box as well. So, for instance, I could search for all music vids posted by eklek, kulpims, and farhard to get my fix of really weird shit.

Zonbie says...

Can we have a 'Submitted on (mm/dd/yy)' on all videos so its easier for Gold Stars to *discard a dupe without wondering if its close which one was posted first - not which was was published first (also when you * promote a video to unsifted its time restarts which can make things even worse)

A "HQ" embed button add the &ap=%2526fmt%3D18 to the end of the video would be great (tricky I know) as they are LOADS of videos out there with this feature (the picture is better but often the sound is the biggest improvement, louder and crisper)

Of course, caution to the user to make sure the video does have a HQ embed version or else the "This Video Is Not Available" will appear.

More fancy UI! Maybe for v4.0 but it has been said before that visually we should be even better

Some way to hide Siftbot announcements from Comment counts would be amazing, relegating him to Sysops type information, after 2 years of reading the same lines over and over I just think its time to shelf it.

Power to Crowns to clean up the sift by replacing Embeds (Very often I find HD copies of some Music videos that just itch me to replace) and deleting comments (Look at Zonbies spaz out here for example, a forum admin could snip and tidy this up).

kronosposeidon says...

1. Thumbnails for all the preferred video hosts. Not every video host on the planet, mind you, but the just for the 16 preferred hosts. Hosts that currently need thumbnails (as far as I know):
- Yahoo
- Dailymotion
- Google
- Myspace
- The Onion
- Video Jug
- SpikeTV (formerly iFilm)

2. New video hosts so that sub-Gold members have more choices. A few suggestions:
- Veoh
- Funny Or Die
- blip.tv
Make sure they get thumbnails too if they're brought on board.

3. Get rid of Fora.tv and V-Social as preferred hosts. No one ever uses them.

4. Add a new tab along the top row next to "Blogs" called "Other Features." Here's what I'd like to see in the "Other Features" section:
- tag cloud
- Top 15 new comments
- and other small features that members would like to see

swampgirl says...

Last time you added the ability to view comments w/o needing to open the entire video page. Could we have the ability to add comments in that drop down box too? We could fly through sifts then w/o having to manage as many windows.

Fjnbk says...

1. *bans for any mention of A$$ gravy.

2. Bring channel ranking back, like when they were still collectives and I could know that Lies was ranked 44th.

3. Make convenient bold, italics, strike-through, etc. buttons for the HTML illiterate/incompetent.

4. Let non-charter gold stars and above pick a color for their names. Charters can still retain bolded name privileges.

kronosposeidon says...

How about on our member page you give us the ability to list some of our favorite members, with links to each member's page. That would make it easy for us to communicate with other members. Sort of like a contact list for your email.

xxovercastxx says...

Like Zonbie said above and I've been saying since the 3.0 launch, stop hiding the post time once a video is published. NEVER hide the post time. We need it for judging dupes.

I'd also really like the option to block someone from leaving comments on my profile.

rottenseed says...

How about the basic necessity of keeping the submission date on a video despite it being promoted or sifted...that way we can determine which video is a dupe of what.

I think you smart guys call them "time stamps". But aren't currently stamps, more like penciled in.

Deano says...

Can we have a playlist like wot they have you YouTube? So I can build up a list of videos to watch as i browse VS. Then click play to see them one after the other.

Oh and don't mess with the way voting works. Keep it simple. You make a mistake, just live with it.

Definitely searching by channel please.

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Lots of good ideas - we're writing these up and some will definitely go into 3.3.

For people who say that VideoSift needs to change its aesthetics - I'm wondering what they have in mind?

We're very text based now, and I would describe the layout as "functional" because we have a lot of information to fit into limited screen space. We've stripped out things like graphical vote buttons and curvy corners for maximum information density.

If anyone has ideas around design or layout changes - how about some screen shots? A picture speaks a thousand words - and I like seeing new design ideas.

lucky760 says...

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Very solid ideas.

>> Can we have a 'Submitted on (mm/dd/yy)' on all videos
>> stop hiding the post time once a video is published. NEVER hide the post time.
>> How about the basic necessity of keeping the submission date on a video despite it being promoted or sifted

The posted date/time is and has always been available. Just hover your mouse over the "published by" type label.

>> Could we have the ability to add comments in that drop down box too?

Sorry, SG, this will never be possible for technical reasons.

arvana says...

MarineGunrock says...

Arvana: You can block channels. (Account ->filters)

And please take simplicity into consideration of you feel the need to go mucking about in the layout of the site. I like it because it's very minimalist. Other sites just have way too much going on.

Eklek says...

And as far as the site design concerns, I'd say choose black as default background colour + more darkened panels (less bright white - more grey), and make a quick background colour switch (black or white) in the menu bar (cf. last.fm)..
are there more fans of black?

arvana says...

There are a few improvements I can see in the video submission process to improve usability:

  • auto-upvote for original submitter
  • account preferences to auto-select Status and Comment Emails on submission page
  • auto-selection of channels based on keywords (relevant keyword lists provided by channel owners in channel management pages?)
  • more videos on the Possible Duplicates page (we still get a lot of dupes).

Farhad2000 says...

Am totally a fan of black.

It kills my eyes seeing VS in all white, I changed the CSS so my background is black. Especially when you got VS open on a 24 inch LCD at night, the thing can sear your eyes off.

lucky760 says...

>> auto-upvote for original submitter

Sometimes you don't want to upvote. See this.

>> I changed the CSS so my background is black

For anyone else: you can just change the main background color for yourself in account prefs.

I'm not in favor of that.

My name would be used so much, it would once again crash the servers. Just saying.

blankfist says...

>> ^lucky760:

I never knew that. I always got confused when the time stamp resets once making it to the front page. This was always an issue when finding dupes, and I think it's very misleading. I can see some new gold star members not knowing to hover over "published by" (hell, I didn't even know that) and discarding videos they see as a dupe.

More thoughts:
1. A warning when downvoting a video. Nothing sucks more than downvoting a video you intended to upvote.
2. 1 channel creation per person.
3. Instant star point for any mention of A$$ GR@V33.
4. It would be cool if there were more privileges past the 250 diamond. I'm at a lost for ideas on that one, though. I'm no help.

I wouldn't change too much, personally, because you don't want to ruin an already good thing.

MrFisk says...

Positive and Negative upvotes? For example, I upvote a lot a videos which I would not endorse. For example, when McCain has an attack ad against Obama, I upvote it for better exposure. However, I don't endorse the actual ad. It would be unfair to downvote it. But perhaps a green and red upvote arrow, with overall number of upvotes atop the total pro and neg votes? Or, for example, that crap video about Jews and conspiracy of 9/11 would be ideal for a negative upvote. Does anyone understand what I'm trying to get across? Could they explain better?
edit: Never mind.

Ryjkyj says...

I've noticed that every once in a while I lose a star point. I wouldn't mention it now except that I just lost another one. I've gone through all my discarded posts and dead videos and I can't figure out why it would've happened.

Perhaps some kind of alert would be handy when stuff like this goes down?

doogle says...

I'm-a-gonna go ahead and plagiarize a suggestion I made for 3.2:

Referring to this comment by doogle:
RE: Sharing tools

I notice that users can submit the video to Stumble Upon

Other sharing sites should be considered, and maybe lump in "Email" into a drop down of Sharing options - (I really like how they do it at the TechDirt website) and add other sharing sites as more can be integrated.

RE: "more inside"
Also, I'm sure this was intended at first, but I'll reiterate that the "more inside" cut off message when descriptions are too long should be css:show and show users right there "more" when clicked without having to take the user to a separate window.

RE: Leaving a comment
And I support being able to leave a comment right there under the video in the listing view, instead of having to go to the video link.

(I'll be following up with another from another time that may have to wait for VideoSift 4.0...)

Tymbrwulf says...

I think the comments listed on the main page of each video should be hidden except for the latest comment posted. Then there could be an option to "see all comments" like in the main page.

This allows the most recent comment to get as much coverage as the first comment. I noticed this might help as I see quality comments could get overlooked because people don't feel like scrolling down. This could also help save on page size .

Instead of requeue, make *beg a button and limit it to three tries. Some achievements would be awesome. I'm totally an achievement whore.

This could be automatically generated: "Who's comments have you upvoted/downvoted the most?" You'll get yourself a friend/nemesis list right there.

I like the concept of stumble upon, so I think we should steal it! I blaze over many, many videos here unless they catch my eye for whatever reason, so a "forced closer look" would not be bad. If it was made so videos you already voted for weren't included, it could be awesome.

my15minutes says...

*showdown

that's my idea/suggestion.
i came up with it shortly after choggie's recent unplanned vacation, actually. i was going to toss it up as a sift talk when he came back, as a welcoming gift, but i chickened out because i have some weird aversion to sifttalk, which is why in a year and a half i've only posted three. yet clearly, i have no such aversion to run-on sentences. but, i digress.

choggie said something, right at the end, about discarding things because he felt the irresistible draw of the shiny red button.

i just never perceived it that way, so his saying that made it much clearer what the problem was. because dag made it pretty clear, i had thought, that discard wasn't for intended for subjective reasons. just dupes, deaths, porn, selflinks, etc, where there wasn't any wiggle room. wiggle room meant discuss first.

so, i thought, choggie wants a shiny red button, let's give it to him.
five bucks gets you one silver bullet.

it may or may not involve the ability to change one's prior vote. if not, we can still rely on those who haven't voted yet, and we're asking them to watch and give an up or down, don't just pass.

anyone who ponies up for the special one-time invoke, forces a *showdown and sends the sift to the top, even above promotes, until the agreed-upon clock time/vote count differential is met, and the sift either stays or gets sent to discardia.

so, just everyone give this comment an up or down, no hard feelings either way, as to whether or not you want a *showdown

[edit] kp - thank you for your honesty! srsly. i was expecting more downvotes.

NicoleBee says...

I guess you already know my suggestion from the other night! A 'random selection of submitted videos' page. For when really bored people like me at work have already dredged through the entire queue and new sifts.

Did your # of applauded comments go down? Perhaps you had a really good comment on someone else's video that got discarded.

I never used it, but that used to be a "Submit to..." link, which, when clicked, would open a selection of options (digg, reddit, stumbleupon, delicious). Not only did the other options go away, it screwed up the layout there as well.

RE: "more inside"
Also, I'm sure this was intended at first, but I'll reiterate that the "more inside" cut off message when descriptions are too long should be css:show and show users right there "more" when clicked without having to take the user to a separate window.

YES! This has been suggested frequently before. Perhaps now its time has come. Please.

How about giving some of the "Pay for" powers to users who have been here forever.

-Like 1 power point for each year you've been a member.
-1 extra queue slot for each year you've been a member.

Stuff like that?

Thylan says...

Playlists. Some way to search for them, organise them, use them that is meaningful. using your own is easy but not others. Like, theirs a Favourite Ant downvotes playlist out there, and i tried to search for ti, so i could suggest a vid, and couldn't not find it for the life of me. Other peoples public playlists are not ... enough.

Some way to channel assign playlists (possibly by plurality of content (like all the playlist vids are of type Music) or to manually assign. most useful for public.

Vote history by channel. Great to see my upvotes from days of yore. even better to go to the tail end of my music upvotes and relisten to something i haven't heard in a year and forgot about.

arvana says...

What about upgrading some of the invocations into buttons and icons? For example, once a video has expired in the queue, it could get a Beg button, and carry a Beg icon next to it while it's in Beggar's Canyon -- rather than have a *bėg comment followed by a Siftbot comment for every invocation.

Same for sticky, promote, quality, nochannel.... Each button would appear only when it is a valid option, and the matching icon would be displayed only while in effect.

That would do a lot to clean up the comments.

MycroftHomlz says...

1. Members highest rated comments.
A collection in the members profile the sorts there comments and lists there top 5 by vote.

2. Promoted Videos and My Promoted Videos
Record both videos I have promoted and videos of mine that have been promoted. This would be two separate things.

3. Notify me if a comment is "quoted".

I also think a tab on the front page that links directly to my unsifted videos would be a good idea. Just throwing that out there.

Eklek says...

>> ^Deano:
How about searching for videos that have no channels assigned? That would make a nice playlist for people to start categorising.

Well: I did this a few times as you can already do this by filtering out all channels:), the posts without a channel assigned will be left..I can recommend opening a new tab in your browser so that you don't need to deselect all those channels afterwards.

burdturgler says...

I'd like to be able to mark a submission as a potential dupe in a way that is recognizable by people who are just browsing the sift. What I mean is, if you just view the video and vote, you might not see the comments that are saying it's a dupe. Those comments are left by people that can't discard. Sometimes 10 or 20 votes are cast before a privileged member finally notices. Those votes don't transfer over afterwards so, you can wind up with situations where a dupe has 30+ votes that gets discarded and meanwhile the "valid" post doesn't make it out of the queue. I think a lot of votes are cast without reading comments. I'm new to the site and late to the post but there's my suggestion.

edit:
I'd also like to see the default for unsifted videos changed to 'newest queue date' instead of whatever crazy algorithm it's using now.

choggie says...

This was something I had thought of at one point too. I've spent enough time editing the intranet wiki at work that I've sometimes started using the syntax in comments here and elsewhere.

I can't imagine this will happen, but if it does, for the love of the Unicorn (MHHNBS), don't model it after MediaWiki's horrific syntax! Use something like Creole.

Just noticed one thing I would really love:

In the notification mail that gets sent out when someone leaves a comment on your clip or bookmark, it would be sweet to include the comment, not just the standard text. I get a lot of these while on the road, and it´s always a hassle to surf over to the site first before being able to read the comment.
Icing on the cake would be a way to reply to the comment by mail but I guess that would be a bit difficult technically.

Oh and I second arvanas suggestion:
account preferences to auto-select Status and Comment Emails on submission page

davidraine says...

An idea came up in the Kids channel for disabling comments to make things safer for the children. Ideally "kid friendly" to me would mean the replacement of the NSFW tag with a rating system and account-level controls to restrict videos above a certain rating, comments, and possibly have a word filter or something ridiculous. I like the adult nature of Videosift though, so I wouldn't want these settings to be defaults... How kid friendly do we want the Sift to be?

paul4dirt says...

"auto-upvote for original submitter"

yes please. the way it works now is just silly. i know i am here only to kill time but still.

im still new so not too sure about what i should comment, just some random things for now:

-design: i love how the site-owners like to keep this site minimalistic and i hope they will keep this in their top-10 list of what this site needs. some remarks though: there is a LOT of white. my mousewheel has never had to endure so much well, wheeling. one vid-listing seems to take up almost half of my screen (on a standard monitor-resolution). would love to also have the ability to view vids listed only with title+screenshot+votes and have the ability to see 50/100 vids on 1 page (esp. @ unsifted)

-took me a little to long to realise how to get to the sifthomepage when i was at a channelpage. (yes, its in the main menu, but maybe link the videosift part of the title ('music videosift') to the frontpage.

-i always like more statistics. little graphs about the number of users, number of vids, number of views number of votes, etc.

-a girls-who-wrestle channel, maybe even a girls-who-wrestle site like whatsitcalled escalocopter, escecopter (i wouldnt visit, but boy would that get popular, or is there already a site for people who like to see vids of girls wrestling?)

-the logo text looks pixelated (not sure what the word is, but you understand)

hmm ill add some more later.

paul4dirt says...

not sure if this was mentioned before, or maybe its even already possible but maybe voting+ranking for playlists would be nice

(and sifttalk rearranging options, so you can see the ones with new comments first - might be possible too, but i didnt find it yet)

paul4dirt says...

dunno if this can be done but it might be nice to be able to fav youtube videos that are on here without having to go to the youtube site (by clicking on the video)

paul4dirt says...

i thought a little about that last comment and came up with what i think is a nice idea to make this site even better.

what about..a command line interface thing. so you post something like "*siftbot:*fav youtube" in a comment and then it is automatically added as a youtube fav. (the comment wouldnt show up as a comment on the page if you type *siftbot in front of it, this would also be a good solution to not have every promote/beg/etc take up 2 commentslots, now only if you want to it shows up)

ofcourse, a lot of cool things could be added without the need for many buttons. adding to playlists, making 'need to watch later'/monitoring lists, emailing the vid to friends, it would even become a bit simpler to also have a rating system based on votes 0-10 and not only upvote/downvote so the lists could be not only about popularity but also about quality. (instead of '156 upvotes' a vid would also have a 1-10 rating), maybe even the option to add personal tags to others videos so you could sort vids you have seen according to those keywords without having to create lots of channels.

hmm just some basic ideas, obviously if you do things by commandline and not buttons/text (finally rid of the stumbleupon button that keeps annoying me!)a lot more could be thought up & added for the regular sifter while still keeping the design clean.

(+ an easier to navigate sifttalk would be nice, maybe just a forum like a Simple Machines forum? i easily get lost in the sifttalk as it is now, a forum with subforums for the channels might work better)

paul4dirt says...

maybe an option to make some of your blogpostings private too (like the comments), could be a good place to store vids for future sifting. (or maybe even make a private future-sift-option that automatically adds vids from there to your pool when other vids get send to pqueue)
