Version 4.0 Issues

As with any new software, there are bound to be little glitches or oddities here and there. Please use this post to report anything you know isn't working right.
radx says...

A rather old and even more negligible issue still around: the mouseover for the mark of applauded comments still says "star point awarded", even though it was switched to power points quite a while ago.

Edit: the note when fixing a dead video still speaks of star points as well.
Note: You will not be rewarded a star for this fix because you received a star reward too recently.

Deano says...

Many excellent changes and I particularly like the improved navigation.

Pity you can't search Playlists yet but I guess that's one for the future.

Talking about breaking out frequently used links how about having the most commonly used sorting options as links spaced horizontally above the current list of videos, be it the Sifted, Unsifted or a search result?

So you would have these links above the first video;
Sort by: Newest - Oldest - Most Votes - Least Votes

The other suggestion I would make is that a search link is included in the main navigation for each option.

So when you click "Front" you see;
Recent Sifts - Top Sifts - Random Video - Recommended - Dead Pool - Search

And for "Unsifted"
Recently Posted - Beggars Canyon - Search

and so on.
This would make finding video a bit easier especially for newer users and visitors.

radx says...

>> ^Deano:
I see this as a problem;
I'm on http://viral.videosift.com/ and if I click the VS logo or Front I'm still stuck on Viral.
How does one return to www.videosift.com?

Front -> VideoSift Homepage

That said, I have trapped myself on subpages like comedy more than once, especially during late hours. Brain couldn't work out an escape route anymore.

Deano says...

radx, thanks.

It's not terribly obvious though is it? I've always had this issue with navigation from the sub-domains to the top. IMO the logo should always take you to the main site entry point.

BTW I tried to Quote your comment but it didn't work and I've had that problem before.

Ornthoron says...

Not a bug really, but something to think about in later upgrades: It would be nice to be able to expand the video description without having to go to the video page itself, just as one can view the comments without having to load a new page.

EDD says...

First off, great update guys, my hat's off to all 3 of you - it's a fantastic accomplishment.

First thing I noticed though is there probably ought to be a different icon for bookmarked videos (in 3.3 you used to be able to differentiate between "bookmark" and "unbookmark" - not anymore).

I'll probably find something else to nitpick on though, so stay tuned

And thanks again for all the hard work

radx says...

I just upvoted a video in the beggars canyon so now it has ten votes. But it still shows in the beggars canyon and as pqueued to me.
http://www.videosift.com/video/Aphex-Twin-Rhubarb-Cover-on-Acoustic-
Guitar

To quote the new FAQ:
Currently, 15 votes are required to sift up a queued video to the front page.

The bar was raised, ladies. If only it were a limbo contest ... instead, 1/5 of my limited portfolio wouldn't even qualify under the new rule.

demon_ix says...

1. The preferences page is sorted by tabs, which is nice to categorize, but isn't really needed (in my opinion), since the preferences could easily be displayed on one page without much scrolling down.
As it is now, whenever I change something on the preferences and click "save" I get an unexplained error, and have to recall from past experience, that I need to confirm my password.
So I guess my point is: Is it possible to add an option to show the preferences page in one page and not in the current category display?
Also below the avatar submission button, there's a superfluous line break, making the text broken:

"Note: Use of an image containing offensive content and/or
nudity
is strictly forbidden and may result in a permanent ban."

Though it may just be how it's displayed either in my resolution or on Chrome. Very minor, I'm just a prick about details.

2. The auto-scroll-on-video-window feature: I'm talking about the new way the windows open on the main screen, which is excellent, apart from the page automatically moving to the video. Is there a way to turn off that feature? So far it's been annoying the crap out of me, since I'm not expecting it, but I really liked the old way they opened without moving my page to the video, and if there's a way to make VS behave that way again for me, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for reading, and good job on the site upgrade in general! Feels very nice

thegrimsleeper says...

Two problems. If you have the view set to "Gallery" the confirmation page when you are trying to submit a new video is all messed up.

See here and here.

Also, NoScript seems to have a problem with the "submit new video" page. After I verify the embed code and "click here to submit it now" I get this message and half of my embed is cut off so I have to paste it again. I have already set NoScript to "Allow all this page."

Hey, great upgrade!

I'm using Chrome, and on about every one out of three or four video pages, the video tiself will still be the size of what it would be as a thumbnail on the front page. However, doing a page reload has so far fixed the problem.

For some reason mintbbb can't log in. She's being presented with a login page that says:

Clearing her videosift.com cookies didn't help, and her usual login/password aren't working either.

Mozilla 3.5 on Windows 7 with NoScript and Adblock Plus does something wierd; when I type www.videosift.com, it dumps me to a beta login page.

ant says...

amazon command doesn't seem to work like in http://www.videosift.com/video/Vitalic-Your-Disco-Song#comment-818209 ... Maybe I messed up?

Also, using FlashBlock v1.3.14 extension in SeaMonkey v1.1.17 (Windows and Debian/Linux) blocks embedded videos completely! That only happens IN web pages and not on front page. Examples: http://www.videosift.com/video/Total-solar-eclipse-in-Iwo-Jima-Japan-22-July-2009 and http://www.videosift.com/video/subprime ...

lucky760 says...

Most of the above problems have been corrected.

Ant, submitting that embed code you linked works now. If you're unsure about how many queued videos you have, you can pop open that "unsifted videos" tab under your username to see all your queued vids. See the starpower page to see how to use the *amazon invocation; you can't just invoke it by itself because you have to specify an amazon.com url. I'm not familiar with FlashBlock, but I guess you should try disabling it for videosift.

Ah interesting. But will it tell me if I can submit another video with available points?

As for the embedded video code, it did work earlier but it just showed the funky HTML tag which was weird. Minor bug.

Thanks for the Amazon link, but it didn't work I put (asterisk symbol)amazon=http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=vitalic+your+disco+song&x=0&y=0 for http://www.videosift.com/video/Vitalic-Your-Disco-Song ... I saw "Please wait..." and then nothing. I reloaded/refreshed the Web page and still nothing.

As for FlashBlock, it is a popular extension for Mozilla's web browsers. Basically, it shows a "F" icon in Flash areas and requires user to click on it to play the Flash area. Very handy! On VS, when I click on "F" icon, embedded videos do not show up at all. I did whitelist for VS, but then all videos are loaded and sometimes I wait too long and YouTube says video doesn't exist. I load all new unwatched VS videos in tabs to watch later.

lucky760 says...

>> Ah interesting. But will it tell me if I can submit another video with available points?

For that you have to go to the full submit page, but knowing that it requires 2 points, you can just look at the points next to your username to determine if you will be able to add that extra queue slot. See, if there is a minimum of 2 points there you can, but with fewer than 2 points you cannot.

OK, thanks.

Weird I got an e-mail notification about your Flashblock comment, but I didn't see it in here. To answer your question, I e-mailed FlashBlock developers to see why Flash videos don't show up after clicking on "F" icon to show them. http://flashblock.mozdev.org/ is the home page to get it if you want to get the extension.

The FlashBlock problem started after the 4.0 release. I mean that after 4.0 was released, Flashbock was working fine on video pages, then sometime in the last few hours it stopped working. Maybe it was something you changed while fixing other stuff.

Also, layout of this page is all screwy now. The main column is extra wide, and the right column is squished into about one inch. Actually, it's not really squished so much as truncated.

joedirt says...

One easy change that I think would be helpful.
Under the dropdown list for your username, the first one listed should be My Profile.
Yes, you can just click on your name, but some people might not figure that out, especially new users.

Also, with FF, the main page is fine, but when I click to post a comment, I have to have 1280 wide browser because the comments part is static width and huge. The comments don't even wrap and get smaller when you resize the window width. Seems crazy to have to scroll over if you use 1024 wide.

blankfist says...

Looking awesome! I'm digging it. I did come across a weird bug. Here's how you reproduce it. Go here and upvote all the videos starting with the top video and moving down sequentially to the very last video. Once you are finished, a naked picture of Jessica Alba appears. Weird, right? Searching is screwed up. I wanted to find all the videos sifted with 10-14 votes and sort them by age, but the search not only messes up the sort order, there's lots of videos with more than 14 votes listed. It also seems unlikely that there are exactly 1000 of them, or is that a limitation of the search?

It's not a bug per se. The reason is that our search engine is updated for archived posts only once a day and it just so happens that the few odd posts you saw got more votes since the last time the search index was updated.

>> ^Stingray:
I have no recommended sifts to view.

Neither do I at the moment, but you probably will tomorrow. The listing is updated once a day based on your voting history, so the more voting you do and the more voting everyone else does, the more recommendations you'll have.

Oops. Fixed.

Arsenault185 says...

Two things, well, 3 actually.

1. Great job guys. 'nuff said.

2. The line contain the info about who submitted what and when that appears under every video falls below the dotted line. Though everything matches up, when you see all the videos in a list, it almost looks like that information should belong to the video under it, because that line seems to separate the videos. Consider moving the line below the text which it appears above.

3. Something to think about for 4.1 -
When viewing a thread either on a video or a sift talk, if you try to add a comment, you are redirected to another page. Perhaps build-in the functionality to add a comment and stay on the same page.

Once again, do as you see fit, its your site, and we are merely Siftbot's pawns. Oh and great job, once again.

[Edit] 1 more thing. where it says "possible invocations, blah blah blah, grayed out, blah blah" you have front page listed twice.

Shepppard says...

Not too sure where this bug comes from, but I had two tabs open, both of videosift, one day mode, one night mode.

On the night mode one, I went to click a video, and then it switched over to day, and sent me to my recent comments page.

[Edit] Tried this a couple more times now and it appears to be working fine now, must've just been a browser issue.

CNR for me. [grin]

ant says...

OK, I really don't like the redesigned submission feature as it is not its own web page. When it wants me to paste a code, I sometimes hover another area (a link like "Sift Talk" -- don't need to click) in the web page, and the submission window vanishes and I redo the submission process from the beginning!

Also, it doesn't seem to carry over my pasted embed code correctly. Example: http://pastie.org/559990 (my pasted HTML embedded code) and results: http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/5580/screenshots.gif ... Same for http://pastie.org/560007 code with similiar results.

geo321 says...

The new embed window doesn't accept the full code from Vimeo videos for some reason. It's not a big deal in that you can just repost the full imbed later on. but anyway. I'm being nitpicky. I'm just happy that I can submit vimeo. cheers.

lucky760 says...

@ant: That submission bug has been fixed. Even still, to make it easier for you to submit, we've also added a "Submit Video" link under the "Unsifted" tab.

@Crake/deputydog: Sorry you're not getting any recommendations yet. It has only to do with a lack of the required type of voting activity either on your part or on everyone else's part. In other words, you have to do a certain amount of voting (at least 10 votes) and there has to be other common voters who have voted on most of those in the past day or so. If either of those requirements aren't met, the system has insufficient data with which to generate useful recommendations.

burdturgler says...

Should "Start a Poll" be listed as an option in the "Sift Talk Tools" section of talk posts and the drop down menu from the upper banner when a poll is currently active? Clicking either just returns an error.

notarobot says...

So... many... comments...

Not sure if this has been mentioned or not, the "blocked" flag sometimes hangs out far to the right of the actual video, as if "blocked" is too GOOD to sit next to the blocked video, or maybe the video is mad about being blocked and told "blocked" to go away, and "blocked" tried, but then decided to stick around, just not close. Like a stalker or something. Clearly they have issues in their relationship.

Either way, blocked videos suck. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v605/srichey/Picture2.png

I generally upvote videos that have been on VideoSift for a long time already. So chances are recommendations will never work for me.

Why can't the recommendations work without the time limit of having other common voters with the past day? I know it may show a lot of recommendations, but can't you just cap the limit? It's like Facebook. It doesn't show me all these hundreds of friend recommendations... just 27 of them at a time, and then I choose whether I add them or not.

Then it fills in the gap with another recommendation.

Just thinking out loud (and by out loud, I mean silently typing).

lucky760 says...

Unfortunately we don't have the limitless resources available like facebook does. As you might expect, votes are the most plentiful bit of data we manage. With so much data, it becomes a gargantuan task to do large scale processing. Even the day worth of votes we're limiting ourselves to now for recommendations is a weighty task. We would really like it if we could compile recommendations based on all votes ever cast, but it would take hours to calculate that just one time. In short, we're only processing a day worth of votes at a time because we need to insure there's as small an impact on our resources as possible.

Norsuelefantti says...

Not really a bug, but how much does the * quality invocation actually boost the hotness of a video. Seems to be a bit underpowered to me. If you can't reach the first page of the hotness-listing it isn't necessarily worth the effort...

blankfist says...

I'm not sure if this is more of a user error than an actual issue with the site. Probably a PEBCAK error, but I wanted to do my due diligence. I cleared my cache/cookies. Upon returning to the site I didn't see a login link, but instead saw New User where my name should go. I rolled over it and there wasn't a dropdown, so I clicked it. It redirected me to the member login.

If it says New Users, should that redirect them to the member login? I also didn't see any place where new users could actually create a profile. Just FYI.

Videos on post pages do not appear if Flashblock is on. I know this was mentioned earlier, but I don't know if this is being worked on, and I wanted to give an update. It's only with videos from some hosts that this happens. I haven't checked all of the allowed hosts yet, but so far YouTube, CollegeHumor, MySpace, Hulu, TheOnion, and Vimeo don't work, but Google and ComedyCentral embeds work just fine. Also, the hover text for the embed says "about:blank" when it doesn't work.

I've tried recreating this issue and it would only happen with an old version of FlashBlock. Tried it using the newest version (1.5.11.2) and embeds show up fine after clicking the FlashBlock icon.

What broser(version) and version of FlashBlock are you using?

lucky760 says...

@overcast/Ornthoron: The blog has been fixed. There was a small hiccup.

@blankfist: It's working fine for me. When you hover on "New User" a drop-down appears with 3 options. Was this the first time you tried it? Try again, maybe that hiccup caused it to break momentarily.

@fford: The problem seems to be in Flashblock, so there's nothing we can do to fix it. I don't know why it's happening, but it's like when you go to the doctor and say, "Every time I do this it hurts," with him replying, "Then don't do that." If things break when you use Flashblock, don't use Flashblock. Sorry, but I'm not sure there's any way to make things work.

[edit]
Just saw CDM's post. So maybe simply upgrading Flashblock is the answer?

lucky760 says...

@SlipperyPete: That's not a bug. Charter members can choose any color they want for their username. Sometimes they even intentionally choose colors that make their name invisible.

Please double check...

When I click on the Blog link at the top of the page, it just redirects me to the main VideoSift page. I think VS sees it as a channel or something (keeps calling things "blogs latest videos").

Also when I directly click on someone's new blog entry (on the rotating panel), I just get a 404 not found.

ReverendTed says...

First: I went to blog.videosift.com and when I clicked to go to the second page, I got a gallery of videos. I changed it to "list" and I got a list of videos.
Edit: I managed to duplicate this one. I did a search (for "stop motion pig" if you're wondering) and then clicked "Blogs". This time, the FIRST page was sifted videos.

Second: I'm using the "light" scheme and when I mouseover links the page content gets shifted slightly as the linked text turns bold and white.
On second glance, this isn't happening on this page. I'll have to go track down where that was happening, or if it was a transient event.

EDD says...

Another problem with bookmarks that I noticed -

when I open a page for a video that I bookmarked before the update, the bookmark link text under the video says "Bookmark" - even though it's already bookmarked. I click on it once and it updates - to the same "Bookmark" (because now it's not bm'ed) and then again, so that it's bookmarked for reals.

And I can't believe this hasn't been brought up before or that I'm the only one with this problem, but what in the world is up with the Submit form??? Every embed code I submit at first gets verified in the drop-down menu, but when I open the full submission page, it's been cut to some 2 lines of code (and doesn't work). This happens even to YT videos.

lucky760 says...

Fixed the "unbookmark" problem.

EDD, can you provide some embed code that's faulty? Everything should be working fine with video submission. Also try doing a hard reload before trying it again. Perhaps your browser's scripts are old, cached ones.

Farhad, you mean you click on the "submit now" link and it takes you to the full vid post form? That shouldn't be happening. If you can, please PM me the URL of the full video post page you're getting when you should be getting the "full queue" page.

SlipperyPete: Are you sure that video was blocked at the time?

lucky760 says...

Can you provide a screenshot of how it's completed screwed? I'm using FF3.5 and everything looks like sunshine and rainbows to me. And commenting works.

You should probably try doing a hard reload as maybe your browser is using old javascript and css files, which could explain the two things you reported.

spoco2 says...

Ok... I can submit now, and mouseover is working... BUT You can't actually select anything from within the mouseover submenu because as soon as you mouseout of the main heading item it goes back to the last selected tab, does not stay on the tab you just moused over.

ie. I am now on the 'Sift Talk' tab. I can mouse over all the other tabs and their sub menus replace the talk one, but if I mouse off the tab to select one of them the sub menu reverts immediately back to the Sift Talk tab.

Which makes it pretty unusable.

someone's probably mentioned it already, but I'm not looking to read through 127 comments. besides, the issue I'm addressing would probably occur during the reading and only further agitate me.

there's nothing like watching a 10+ minute video and having the page refresh on you. and of course by then the video has moved somewhere else on the page...

this was an issue before when reading comments, but you could 'hold' a video open to avoid it until you were done reading. not anymore.

It must have just been a fluke thing. Before and since the upgrade I routinely keep videos expanded on the front page for sometimes hours without a reload. Has it happened repeatedly for you or just the once?

It seems it was a bug that only existed in gallery mode. It's fixed now. Sorry for the annoyance.

Some small issues:
-make channel order alphabetical, per letter, from left to right.
-the small inverted v that is used to indicate that "recently posted" is selected when selecting sift talk in the menu is rather small..
-URLs with _ and other special characters (often the case with wikipedia links) are not properly displayed in comments/video descriptions.

Would make videosift grAter 4sho!:)

Thanks for reporting, AC. All fixed, and boy your profile is blue!

Also, one small thing to keep in mind about profile styling is that after you've saved it, it will take about 1-2 minutes before it's updated on "our server." Once our server has been updated with your newly saved styles, you may have to do a hard reload (ctrl+shift+R) to make your browser refresh it and use it immediately. (Without doing a hard reload, your browser will use its old, cached one until enough time has passed that it decides on its own to try to refresh it with a newer version.)
