Transferable Star Points?

My favorite thing about the Sift is the currency of the vote. The democratic quality of voting. The voice it affords you in affirming something someone else has said, whether they be video submissions or comments.

I wonder about making star points a kind of karmic currency. The ability to give from your own. I like this community and the characters herein so much I probably would given myself back down to a Bronze already.

Plus, once you're a big fat diamond, whatcha gonna do? What's a diamond worth if you can't spend it?

I'm not suggesting that this is at all like power points. You couldn't promote or anything like that. All you could do is give someone a star point of your own. That's all.

I leave good folks to ponder the execution and implications if they wish to.

Cheers!

Well if I wasn't lazy I'd go find em all, but I am lazy so lets just suffice it to say that from my observations that using star points (or sift dollars or siftys), as an exchange medium has been shot down by a majority of the community. I don't think you need to discard your post but I'll sum up how this goes when it's brought up:

Dag:
"How does everyone feel about sift dollars!?"
Mink:
"No! Changes are terrible, I live in Lithuania."
MarineGunnrock:
"Let's ban him for suggesting it!"
Swampgirl:
"I think it might be fun, we should try it."
Gorgonheap:
"Currency would change the focus from sifting videos to hording cash. blah, blah, blah, (something insightful and intelligent.)... And that's why Hillary Clinton is just like Adolf Hitler."
Choggie:
"Blimey Mate, the pip two is full blown horse sheit. No dun-bar forest will whack me own mum ketchup fish."
Lucky:
"Why don't we try it for a while?"
25 following members:
"NO!"
Siftbot:
"Awarding dag with one star point for this contribution to Sift Talk - declared quality by siftbot. And one day you will all bow before me!"

Yeah now you say sift dollars I think I remember. I'm not saying that you could do anything other than *transferstar to another member. I'd like a big way to say thanks, that's all.

E: I could give you one for ^your little vignette of this place, for example. Ha.

I guess you could think of it as a * quality that you can use on video sumbissions and comments or just drop it on a member's profile to show the love, and reinforce what you like about the Sift, the difference being it comes out of YOUR pocket.

I'm not saying you'd have to. But the central idea is that it comes from you . You never need to invoke it. But that Sifter with 9 stars and contributions you love but just can't get over the hump, well you could hit them with a bump. Or that comment that you think is the most essential truth, that thing that HAD to be said, and wish you'd thought of? Star.

Hmmm, I could see turning a power point into a star for another person, but I'm wary of transferring a star point.

What about trading star points for sexual favors?

I think DFT would be so far in to star negatives that that we would have to ban him. At his current rate up star-awarded comments, (of which I'm sure hes made at least 30 since the start of 15 upvotes thing) he would have to make that a day just to get his fix.

Not sure what my thoughts are on this. I like * Quality, in that its a way of recognising an apreciated ST contribution (just as sifting a vid gets a star "for" something, as does 15coment vote stars). Recognition for something/apreciation fo, is inhernt in the sift. kind of what the voting is. but "transfer" and "award" arnt the same thing. haveing the structure behind such, as we do now, provides a framework and coherence. transferable, would allow someone to chose what they valued/apreciated without need for said framework.

DUno how i feel about it though. curiouse, i supose. would like to read over the old threads on this.

Don't really like this proposal. Takes a bit of the site's focus off videos and makes it more about cultivating favor with other sifters. And there is potential for abuse, although I don't think it's likely.

Say that one sifter transfers a star point to another, giving the latter sifter a gold star. The new goldie gives his/her benefactor a * quality.

Don't foresee this happening soon, but I believe that we call the website VideoSift and not StarSift for a reason.
