This site keeps getting hung up

Is anybody else having problems with the site freezing up? It happens every session at least once, going on for a couple weeks now. I'm using IE8. No other websites are giving me problems. When cruising the sift I will go to a page and it will either load no problem, or lock up and my cpu usage goes to 100%. I have to ctrl-alt-dlt to shut down the page. If I see the ad with the football player on the upper right, the page will load. If the football player video wont show, then the page is locked. Any help? or is it just me?

No, but my friend (not a VS member) has the same problem too with his old Windows XP Pro.'s IE8 as well. I thought it was just his old, slow computer or softwares. Are your computer and software old too?

Any other IE8 users having this problem too?

Yes, my IE8 running on Win XP has been starting to hang way to often and I have to close it down using the task manager. This happens to me randomly on many different video sites - not just the Sift. As well is hangs occasional when my son uses Roblox (http://www.roblox.com) Haven't found any fixes for this yet though!

Annoying as heck - My Firefox doesn't hang, so it's not the sites per'say.
My Firefox, on the other hand, is choppy on video playback

Still preferring my mac (at work) which runs the video smoothly on Firefox!

Interesting. So far, all XP + IE8 users. I wonder if this is a known issue with IE8. The thing is that VS relies a lot of video servers/sites.

Yeah, it's an IE8 problem, and can happen outside of XP. Seems to be on sites where a lot of text gets cached like the discussion threads here (or it might not be the cache, but seems to happen when I revisit a page that has a long discussion going). I've never looked into it, just suffered from it when I'm using IE8.

Edit-Id like to add that in my case the page WILl eventually load, but it is frozen solid in the meantime and can sometimes take a little bit, and I do have a very fast rig (just suggesting that people with older systems may be stopping before the time it takes for it to get through the freeze).

Bummer. Hopefully we can find a fix. On the plus side MS has released a developer preview of IE9 which has HTML5 implemented. I don't think it's available to the general public though. I wish they would just give in and use Webkit for their engine. That was a very smart move on Google's part for Chrome.

Chrome tracks every browser uniquely. Google wants to catalog every thing you have or will ever do.

Also, why are you using IE8?/? I can understand if you were at work maybe.... I just can't understand how stupid some people can be using IE8...

I posted about this issue on msnews.microsoft.com's IE newsgroup and got this reply (LOL -- call??) if anyone wants to do it:

My system is older but works pretty good. Its an AMD atholon 3000+ with a gforce 5200 (256 mb)videocard. XP with service pack 3. High speed cable. I have been coming to this site for awhile, since before the big crash, the problem just started within the last few weeks. I dont have the same problems on other videosites that I use. Just wondering if it was just me.
I guess I could try other browsers, I do have chrome , safari and firefox. I just never needed them untill Joedirt pointed out that I'm fuckn stupid.
Anyways...Its not that Im impatient, I have let the frozen page sit for minutes to see if it will load. Task manager reports "non-responsive" so I have to end task.

It has happened a couple more times in the last 20 minutes. I now see its not a random crash, at the bottom of my browser is always the same message "waiting for http://www.au2m8.com v/?ps=24&cw=55315&pid=16943..etc.etc.etc
Does this ring any bells with anybody?

Interesting, www.au2m8.com doesn't load anything (just blank black). What happens if you block it with hosts file method? No more hangs?

I've seen a javascript error message about au2m8 on most every page load on the Sift. The message says that that site is not allowed to access some component of the Sift page it's being loaded on (for security reasons) and that's what seems to cause it to fail.

The actual js error is:
Permission denied for <www.au2m8.com> to call method Location.toString on <www.videosift.com>.

(^I don't think it has anything to do with comments. Dag's just trying to confuse you. )

Ah. Dang it, Dag. Stop confusing us.

rougy says...

^ It might be a browser thing (I'm using Opera 10) but the same thing is happening to me on about every other load.

It's something that's happening before the "Visit our t-shirt store" drop-down appears.
