Oldies but goldies

Have you watched through all the unsifted videos you're interested in and seen the last couple of months worth of sifted videos? Out of ideas about what to sift and need a fresh perspective?
Why not take a trip back in time, to the older sifted videos available to us? Try skipping back to page 1000 of the sift and go backwards, there's no telling what amazing gems you might uncover.

That is the problem with the sift as I see it now, there is alot of good stuff that got sifted before that hardly gets a look now, not simply because it's posted ages about but because the titles, channel allocation and tagging is not as refined as it is now.

You know what MIGHT help a little? (A BIG might, I'll grant you.) How about just ONCE, every 24 hours, Siftbot picks a random old video to promote. Let's just say for the sake of argument that it has to have at least 30 votes to be promoted, and let's define "old" as anything sifted more than 6 months ago. And then, within Siftbot's * promote comment, include a link that reads "Other videos that were popular when this video was sifted", and then include a link for the day or week that particular video sifted that lists all the top videos for that time span. With lucky's fantabulous new search feature, accomplishing that should be a breeze, n'est-ce pas?

Maybe if Siftbot promotes older stuff it will encourage sifters to enter the Wayback Machine and see what lost ancient treasures they might find. Is my suggestion possible, almighty admins?

I like the blast sift from the past idea and those with star power should (according to the Siftetiquette that I think we should make explicit, I mean, look at Wikipedia, they have tons of guidelines and they work. It reminds users of the responsabilities they have.) improve the tagging and channel allocations of older sifts..

fissionchips says...

Before I gained promote powers I somehow got the idea into my head that the promote invocation was only allowed for posts six months old or more. Even though that's not the case I now use that as a guideline. I think it serves the sift well.

^ that's an interesting idea. It makes me think that we could also somehow reward members for "resifting" old gems.

And that gives me another idea: You know how we can fix dead videos any time we want, but can only receive one star a week for doing so, correct? Well how about we do something similar with promoting old videos. Let's say if you * promote an old video, let's say at least 6 months old, then you get a star, but you can only receive one once per week. Is that possible, and would that be a good idea?

Tofumar says...

^ 52 star points a year just for repromoting something older? I don't know about that. Given that it's only Gold-100's and above that can promote anyway, this seems like a way to give the people at the top of the heap an extra hand up. That's especially true if you consider that they probably sifted those older videos in the first place. Maybe if we do this, we should make a rule that you can't repromote an old post if it belongs to you. It seems a bit much that people might be able to pick up a ton of star points and a bunch of votes on their old videos for nothing more than shameless self-promotion.

kronosposeidon says...

^Well, maybe you're right about the frequency. Maybe once every two or three weeks then? And I agree that you shouldn't earn a star for promoting one of your own videos.

Still, you have to consider that people can earn 52 star points a year for doing nothing more than fixing dead videos. So it's still not outside of the realm of possibilities, and if we allow it only every two or three weeks I can't see a downside.

Anyway, it's just a thought for now. I agree with the general sentiment expressed here that older videos need to be seen more often, and this was just one idea I had to encourage that. Plus I think it will help foster a greater sense of community, and I'm all for that because I never know when I might need to call up one of you bastards to bail me out of jail. I tend to lose my clothes when I've been drinking.

This used to be true. Wouldn't be a bad idea to bring back that limitation for published vids.

Something we *SHOULD* bring back is the "CLASSICS" tab which was a collection of all promoted vids. Why'd we take that out, anyway?

swampgirl says...

Kronos idea of Sifty promoting old sifts is nice. If there was a way for Siftbot to promote videos that have no channel assignments, it would give golds a chance to update them with channels and better tags.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

^ the ironic promote. Maybe we could give points based on the amount of action it recieves after it's promoted - for example, if it gets another 20 votes and makes it onto the "hot" page - you get a point for finding a lost gem.

and everyone over 35 said, "Amen."

all great ideas, "More shiny-flashy!!!"
Tofumar???...Shameless self-promotion??!!, Okay, how bout this-we put wannabees inna crate, and beat onnit with a crowbar?!!
