I posted this earlier at the end of the long thread on our recent selk-linking scandal, but I thought it might be worthy of further discussion.
Seriously, why aren't there more channels if organization is the goal?
Coming late to the discussion, but I'll offer my opinion anyway. I don't think that dissolving the collective is the right solution and I hope that fedquip doesn't actually follow through on his promise to do so. In some ways I agree that TayTV has become a hodgepodge of videos without a clear directive but that doesn't mean it doesn't serve a function as a collective. If collectives are meant to help organize the videos on VS, then why do we have channels? If that is really the goal, then perhaps we should expand the number of channels (starting with sports!).

i guess.
channels should just give you a general idea of what the video could be about, but collectives are something more.
well they are similar, ok. well i dunno.
Collectives are the micro-site thing that James or Dag mentioned which directly becomes more useful at classifying info as greater numbers join and as the new Golds create collectives. In other words they energise the community into sifting better and finding stuff that might not otherwise make the sift e.g I think my Bravo collective has unearthed videos that probably wouldn't have made it even if there was say an Opera or Classical channel.
