GooTube categories

Many video sites are top10 and cross tabulated in AOL's SearchVideo.com which is worth a look. They have at least 20-30 video sites cross tabulated, and many to search on, probably giving priority to AOL and their corporate interests (like Nick, CN, etc.)

Not to labor the issue, but I thought I'd compare the categories settled upon by the industry and compare it to what VS has settled into:

My take is that VS focuses on slightly different interests than John Q. Public and Joe Sixpack. Notice most news and TV recap shows are about Celebrities, Movies, TV, and Sports (and local news and weather).

It is interesting that sports and autos have been neglected here, as well as movies / entertainment. But that could also be the nature of the internet, where from the begining of time, the internet was distribution of movie trailers and entertainment clips. They are the static / noise in the video arena.

I find it interesting the "extra" categories VideoSift has hit upon, and also the lack of News and HomeVideo, but that mostly falls under Viral. I'm guessing most Colbert and TDS would be "news" if not purely funny skits. So, as far as collectives goes, here's some good research on opportunities.

Yeah that AOL search agregrator is crazy. Currently 7M videos. The search sucks, like using YouTube. But it does have lots of bells and whistles and you can list 50 hits in text list.

ie. this is a valid search
category:sports channel:"Google Video" sort:mostPopularThisHour tag:"NBA"

The most glaring omission I see is the lack of political content. Videosift is the only one that lists politics as an active video category.

This is explained of course because corporations don't want to see informed citizens, to them politics seems like a boring topic. Yet it's one I think that attracts a different type of public to Videosift.

I noticed that Grouper is the closest to our categories, or talked about categories. It is funny the difference a corporate top-down approach, vs. a metacafe / grouper bottoms-up will generate whole different categories.

I noticed Grouper does have Politics, and the Wheels & wings is pretty smart. I also notice that almost every category list has "Travel" which is almost non-existent on the VS. Same for "Sports".

Also, FYI, I noticed Revver is doing "Collections" now also. http://one.revver.com/revver/featured_collections which are like playlists.

I could see an autmotive channel doing alright here. I think the only sports that ever gotten any real coverage here has been the world cup. I would like to see a cooking channel at some point in the future, but currently the back catalog for such a channel is pretty weak.
