Geek AND Tech, or two for the price of one?

Does anybody else feel that there should be a separate channel for tech sifts?

Whenever I get around to cleaning up the Science channel, I inevitably find some videos that do not belong in the Geek channel, so the closest fit people could think of is Science, so that's where they put it.

I know there's a huge overlap between Geek and Tech, but not all Tech is Geek, and not all Geek is Tech. For example, Solar Air Conditioning is Science, but it's also definitely Tech but only Geek in the loosest sense of the word. So, I'd be happy to put it in Science and Tech, but...we don't have a Tech channel anymore.

I guess I just feel that the concept of Tech always being Geek is co-opting both ideas, and that it's leading to incorrect channel-sifting.

Hmm, according to my slide rule - the overlap is 84.78 percent. I haven't felt there were many instances when something would be tech and not geek. Geek does cast a wider net- includes science fiction etc.

Perhaps a Nerd and Geek channel. At least for me Geek cover a pretty diverse range of subjects, much like Music covers everything from country, rap, pop, and the Icelandic wailing of bjork. I don't see why geek wouldn't be appropriate for them all.

Looris, what you're saying is off-topic for this Sift Talk post. I'm saying that "geek" is being used to describe things that aren't truly geeky but are tech-y. And then when people realize that they're tech-y but not geeky, they dump them in Science because that's the closest thing they have to it. It's annoying to me, and I for one would like to see a tech channel. I believe that although most tech things are geeky for now, the existence of a channel would promote more strictly tech-y things. I guess Dag has the last call on this, but I figured I might as well voice my opinion/frustration.

Heck, if we're worried about overlap between the Geek channel and other channels....why the heck does the Video Games channel exist?

Actually, I'm being narrow-minded.

Why do we have a Gay channel, when we have a Sexuality channel? Why do we have an Islamica channel, when we have a Religion channel? Why do we have a Live Music channel, when we have a Music channel? Why do we have a Late Night channel, when we have a Comedy channel? Why do we have a Grindhouse channel and Horrorshow channel, when we have a Cinema channel? Why do we have a Matt Groening channel, when we have an Animation channel?

Shall I go on?

Well you took all the good ones, but I think rembar has a very *quality and valid point. I mean sure we could end up like vimeo and have 400 gagillion different channels. But I say "simplify, simplify, simplify." The nature of channels has changed from 2.5 to 3.0. It used to be a "club" for members. Now they seem to be more like channels then collectives. I thought there was a lot of overlapping and far too narrow genres before we ended up with 40+ channels. I say it's time to restructure.
