Cross Posting to Sift Talk

I know everybody wants their channel talk posts to be seen by as many people as possible, but the "Newest Channel Talk Posts" sidebar was created just for this purpose.

<gripe>Please stop cross posting channel specific talk posts to the main sift talk area. It really clogs things up, and pushes relevant talk posts off the main page very quickly. </gripe>

I know banned user vids can do the same thing, but that's why they get discarded if a bunch show up in a short period of time.

I just think we get too serious about this sometimes, and there are way too many rules as is. Can we dial it back a bit? All of the links Eklek posted seem fine to me to be cross posted between channels and sift.

Yes, for anything that is topic related and would fit in a channel talk, please put it there. In some cases the post might get more attention in the long run, as it's more likely to hang around in the recent channel posts sidebar.

It's not a rule thing. I'm just trying to make things work better/more smoothly. Channel talk posts get exposure in the sidebar, for quite a while usually. Primary sift talk posts that get pushed off the first page after a day or two generally don't get much traffic at all. And those are often ones that should get the most notice because they are generally about things that affect everyone at VS.

I'm one of the offending parties here, and I have to admit to some confusion. I thought that posting a Sift Talk was the same as submitting a video. That is, when a video gets submitted, it goes into the queue with all the other unsifted videos, regardless of the channels to which it is assigned. If someone wants to view only those videos assigned to a certain channel, it's up to them to click on the "election08" (for example) next to the thumbnail.

Why is Sift Talk different? I agree with blankfist that it's nice to be able to look over everything all at once, just as we do with videos. If I want to narrow my options, I can click a channel. And if there's anything important that we don't want displaced, someone with the relevant powers can "sticky" it, right?

Anyway, I'll do as I'm told from now on, but it doesn't seem to be all that much of a bother to look through a page of Sift Talk posts. After all, that's what I came here to do.

P.S. This "channel-specific posting only in Sift Talk" thing has gotta be one of the more poorly promulgated rules in the whole place.

I don't know - I think there is some logic to it. This is "Sift Talk" So this is where we talk about the "The Sift". On "Politics Talk" we discuss politics - it makes sense to me

... Some things might be about politics and relate to the VideoSift community. Say, a post debating whether VideoSift should endorse a candidate. In that case it could be cross-posted.

Agree whole-heartedly, with a joedirt aire of matter-of-fact. Sift-Talk posts concerned with the sift-use the blog-specific sidebar for personal hoo-has
Why am I not surprised that blankfischt disagrees, pants half-staffed at knees????

I agree that we should specify channels and not cross post everything. That doesn't mean sifttalk has to be totally serious 100% of the time. Siftversaries and other celebrations/silliness/leisure is welcome time to time. Or maybe if we had some sort of device like the "featured member comment" that listed most recent gold star/100 star/diamond etc, we could go to the individuals profile and have a party there.

Yeah, it's not about rules or keeping everything serious. I mean, if someone posted to sift talk to ask about whether a vid of Uwe Boll getting his skull caved in by WoW fanatics would qualify as snuff, then yeah, it's a "videogames" talk post, but also appropriate to the main page.

Still, I hope all of your avatars get digital AIDS.

Well, seeing as I'm dead, I guess another digitally transmitted disease couldn't really hurt.

You misunderstand me. I don't mean it's nonsensical; of course it's not. What I meant was that while I've only been actively submitting videos for about 6 weeks, I've been lurking since 2006, and I'd never once heard that Sift Talk was supposed to operate with what might be called "channel exclusivity." That could just be due to my own ignorance, and now that I know, I will do things properly. But I was just pointing out that this was one of those informal rules/courtesies the knowledge of which didn't get passed around so well.

It's interesting how way back in the day there was about lack of blogging/writing options, now it might seem like we have too many.

I would call for all blogs and Talks to be managed in one feed. With "Sift Specific" talks separate and prominent.

Its a good question to discuss, but I don't think it's that big of a problem just yet for immediate action.
