Channel Ideas.

I've got a few channel ideas I'd like to bounce off the community. Here are the ones I like best:

The Dark Channel: A home for all things murky, twisted, avant gard, noir, weird, disturbing, emotionally complex, sad, angry, depressing, darkly funny or even just literally visually dark.

The Trippy Channel: Better sifting through chemistry. Watching videos is a great thing to do with an expanded consciousness, so why not put the most mind blowing videos together on one channel?

The Independent Film Channel: A home for indie films, clips, trailers, shorts, student films and experimental films. I'd also like to seek a self-link exemption for filmmakers sifters like blankfist and sarzy. It would be nice if trusted users could share their art with the community.

I'd love to see all 3 of these channels come to life, so if someone had something similar (or identical) in mind, let me know.

Thoughts? Ideas? Reactions?

I support all three you propose.

In labeling some recent vids, I had to leave some channels out. Do you think we're going to need to go up to six for a channel maximum? I'm only putting the idea out there.

YES YES YES, there have been numerous times I've wanted to post vids into those channels (and more, but i know we don't want 3 billion channels..)

RE: self-linking.. i was going to say the blogs are a way around that, with users plugging their material and then others can sift it up, as has been done a little in the past -- but of course not everyone has blogs.. i don't feel it sits right with siftology to self-link though, even if it is brilliant content generated within the community, i still think it needs to be sifted by someone else. is there a way we could have an area for people to recommend their own content that they'd like others to sift? alternatively, perhaps a self-link from a trusted user garners no star point? i don't know, this is murky... worth discussing though, because as we've seen, some of the people here have stuff a lot of us would appreciate seeing.

A potential channel idea (won't be offended if people think it's useless):

*talent - people showcasing skill.. instruments/sport/juggling/singing/dancing/whatever, those clips that make you go WOW! (i often think of the bravo channel but its description doesn't match.)

G, the dark and trippy channel-ideas fall into my Dreamtrip 2.0 playlist

An indie film channel could complement the cinema channel, but indie film is also cinema I think.

(last edit on July 4 2008)
These channels I think are missing on Videosift:
-*homme (to complement femme/sexuality/gay)
-"animals behaving like humans" (and vice versa;) ) channel
-usa, japan(orama), france, spain, italy, germany, russia, china, india, mexico etc. (to complement british/canada)
-*africa, europe, *latin (to complement asia, downunder)
-aquatic
-90s, 00s (to complement vintage/80s/future)
-celebrity/gossip/tabloid/sensational (to complement lies)
-*lectures/presentations/talks
-*energy, agriculture, *health, *education, law
-*dance, fashion, theatre, comics, architecture, design (to complement art/cinema/(live)music/shortfilms/obscure)
-*electronic(a) (for electronic music, to complement rocknroll/wildwestshow/jazzblues/bravo)
-crime, romance (to complement mystery/comedy/horror/wildwestshow/grindhouse)
-mash-up, fan videos (to complement meme)
-*melancholy/drama (to supplement happy/dark/fear)
-pranks (to complement standup/parody)

*=the ones I think are most needed

Those are great channels. I also dig the idea of adding your video to more than just 5 channels as a maximum. I don't get that. If it fits, then it should go into as many channels as would make sense. I've had videos on here that could fit into ten channels. I've also had videos that didn't really seem to fit in any of the channels.

Eklek touched on this already, but I think there should be channels for each major world region. We already have Asia, so we should add:

North America
South America
Africa
Europe
Oceana (Australia, NZ, & Pacific Islands)

Along with this I think we need a 6th channel, just like dotdude suggested.

Your channel suggestions are all cool. I don't see how you can wrong with any one of them. I think I lean toward the Dark channel, as I'm a bit dark myself.

Sarzy says...

I think a United States / North America channel would probably be a bad idea, simply because it would apply to about 95% of the videos on here and would get completely bogged down.
