Allow Self-Linking for Dead Videos
I was going to start a poll about it, but I wanted to get an idea what people thought about it first.
I usually keep a copy of videos that I sift which I know are going to get pulled for whatever reason (copyright etc). I also keep copies of other sifters clips that I like or are very popular if I think they will get pulled.
It would be a lot easier to fix dead videos if we could just host it ourselves and fix it without it being considered a self link.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...........I'd have to go with "no" on this one. I've thought about how much easier this would be, but if you really want you can ask another sifter to dl the video from your youtube account and then post it on theirs. Then you can embed from their account.
This has been discussed before (for instance here, and here).
I think the general consensus was it's ok to fix a dead video with a "self link" so long as the original VS post wasn't your own.
I asked Lucky about this awhile ago and this was what I was told:
"Funnily enough, that's actually been discussed before, and the final verdict was that, yes, it is still a self-link.

Hey Lucky,
Quick question. If I fix someone else's dead video with an embed from my own youtube account, is that considered a self link?
Thanks."

^ Then you'd better ban me, lucky. I've fixed someone else's dead vids with videos from my youtube account numerous times.
It was nice knowing you all.

Either you or he misunderstood. Fixing someone else's video with your own is not a self-link. If it were, why would you ask someone else to host it for you?

What part of his reply do you think I may have misunderstood?
It was a pretty straight forward question. And so was the reply imo.
If that's not the right answer, great!
I still would like to be able to fix my own dead embeds though. What's the harm in that?

Someone else hosting it makes it not a self link. Little unclear what the point was there, sorry.
Why would I ask someone else to host it if it weren't a self link?

That you run into a contradiction, and as a VS user I would not like to have (any more) double standards here.
No self links are permitted.
if the video is fixed by your own link, then it is a self link. There is no way around it.
Just ask any user to upload it for you. Put the video on rapidshare or something and I will gladly upload them somewhere.
I think there is a misunderstanding like MG said because to call a link you upload and use to fix someone else's post a self link defies all logic.
edit: you edited your post and im all confused now. bleh
Well there's no need to be confused.
You're saying it's ok to fix a dead video of someone else's with my own hosted embed.
Lucky said it was a self link.
I have sent him a PM so he can clarify.
Although honestly I don't see where my original question to him was unclear at all.
The confusing part is that you talked about both fixing your own sift with your uploads as well as using your uploads to fix someone else's sift. The latter should be, as common sense dictates, fine and the former would still be considered a selflink.
Also this: "... but I wanted to get an idea what people thought about it first." is basically what polls are for
In my question to lucky I said:

"Funnily enough, that's actually been discussed before, and the final verdict was that, yes, it is still a self-link."

It really aint complicated. I never said anything about fixing my own sift.

I didn't want to occupy a poll slot for 3 days if I was the only one who gave a shit about this. So I thought I thought I'd gauge interest first.

If you're banned, I get your nifty top hat.
While we figure this out ..
would someone be so kind as to host this for me?

Thanks.
That quote of my comment wasn't me misunderstanding. It was shortly after a duplicate of this ST post and the ruling from the community at that time was that it is still self-linking if you fix someone else's dead with your own upload. (That's why multiple members have in the past created dummy YouTube accounts- solely to upload replacements for other members.)
This is definitely the exact type of question for which the poll feature was created. All this debate can be settled quite easily by going that route. No need to discuss the question then vote on the question then discuss the vote on the question.
Poll please.
I'm *discarding this so discussion can continue in the poll then.
