Learning by doing, that's how plenty of schools work these days. It might've been a harsh lesson to learn, but it's one of the most important ones nonetheless. Especially if (and by the looks of it they are) you're impoverished.

yea, it's a harsh valuable lesson that coulda been learned on any other of the 364 days in the year.

Couldn't he have just lied to the kid about the existence of Santa? That's how I learned not to trust my parents at an early age (and lucky I did too).
