They missed the death star explosion in Ep 4. All in all, I prefer the classic versions though.

The new prequels are so bad, they've soured the original trilogy for me. That and I'm not 12 anymore.

Yeah, not only did they ruin a lot of the original concepts, but that is really some of the worst CG I've ever seen. I seriously think the re-released episodes were an internship project at ILM.

I fell asleep in the theater when the "OG" episodes came out. I thought they would buff it up but they royally screwed it.

The only original release I ever saw in the theater was Return of the Jedi in 1983.

These demonstrate why I HATE the CGI laden, completely screwed reworkings of the originals. Taking great scenes and just throwing in 'comic' cg crap does not a better movie make.

And then Lucas further insulted the fans by giving us the original movies on DVD... as 'a bonus extra' with his messed up reworkings AND the worst possible quality he could find AND not optimized for widescreen tvs, effectively ENSURING you prefer the new versions.

To see how good the original trilogy could look, check out the work this guy is doing (he's a professional screen effects and movie music composer who is doing this for his own gratification).

He has a HD source for Star Wars and is going through the thing frame by frame cleaning it up... the bits he's shown of it so far are looking superb! Pity it's not being released (for legal reasons, obviously).

CG artists work frame by frame, I find it often in all CG laden movies they tend to over do it because they work in millions of frames instead of a smooth shot sequence that runs longer over all.

Leading to very sudden and over animated animation. This is disconcerting to the viewer when watching, because the director is supposed to lead you through sequences not make a spectacle from one shot to the next. Subtlety is key for CG effects. Something seen in the very best of CG films.

Adywan's version of ANH was pretty well done. The only thing I would have changed on his version was the electricity he added to the interrogation droid that comes in and visits Leia. The Death Star starting to fire as it blew up at the end was actually a nice touch.

His fanedit is probably the best one I've seen so far.

Well, the LD rip is floating around out there if you know where to look. It's a nice, DVD quality version of the originals.

They forgot the change that offends me most, even worse than having Greedo shoot first. The special edition of Empire added a scream when Luke falls down the shaft after having his hand cut off by Darth Vader. It made no sense because Jedi don't scream in terror, especially considering Luke dropped himself off the footbridge in defiance of Vader. I think this was removed for the reworked 2004 DVD set.

Except for the car chase, which is totally ridiculous, the CGI stuff in THX-1138 special edition actually works okay. Of course, that film wasn't very good to begin with, which is probably why.

The CGI in the prequels was atrocious, and often made me think I was watching a cartoon, which I suppose went well with some of the childish slapstick, and dragon ball Z ninja style fighting they threw in.

As for the additions, some of the opening sequence and background changes were okay, well they would be if they didn't have goofy little robots flying around. Some was just unnecessary, and other abhorrent. They should have been going for subtlety, instead they went for HEY HEY HEY LOOK AT ME HEY OVER HERE HEY HEY IM DIFFERENT NOW LOOK HEY LOOK!

Most of the new special effects they added in the special edition were distracting frills that added nothing to the story. When special effects were more difficult, people tended to use them more carefully. Now most TV channels have frivolous, useless, and distracting graphics dancing around the screen most of the time.
