"They hate our freedom" is simplistic - but not wholly incorrect. People around the globe understand that there's a cultural war in progress, and that the US, over the last century, has been winning that war. Look around the world and you'll American movies, brands, and - most importantly - values have made wide inroads into foreign cultures. Sure Osama doesn't like military bases in Saudi Arabia, but he knows those bases won't actually mean all that much.

What could have a much more profound impact is globalization, corporations, brands, movies, culture. The US isn't going to kill all Muslims or something, but over time these countries could become much more American.

Certainly military bases and support for Israel are important - but they're hardly the whole picture.

I don't think this has much to do with a cultural war, per se. But, that's a very interesting perspective, jmzero, and I don't think too many people are considering that perspective. I think this has more to do with blowback and America's intervening with foreign affairs than anything else, in my opinion.
