In the mirror test, scientist make two small marks (usually some bright color) on an animal, one a control and the other the test dot. The control dot can be seen by the animal without the mirror, but the test dot can only be seen if the mirror is used. Then the animal is put in front of the mirror. If the animal reacts to both spots in the same manner, then it passes this self-awareness test.
