Well I don't think he realized where the car was headed...he just saw it coming and realized he shouldn't have been in the road in the first place.

Makes me think of football(soccer) where we always like to see players diving into great last-ditched tackles but in reality sometimes they shouldn't haven't been in such a bad position as to have to make the last-ditch tackle in the first place.
