My meal at Alinea was one of the most creative & delicious meals of my entire life. If at all possible, go there.

The french laundry is one of the most famous restaurants in north america. The chef, Thomas Kellar is the only american born chef to have 3 stars from le guide michelin, and he currently has a total of something like 8, which puts him in super-chef stratus. What's more, the cookbooks for The French Laundry and Bouchon, his Bistro in Napa, are absolutely gorgeous, and widely distributed and extremely popular in the cooking world. Also, a full third of Michael Ruhlman's book "The Soul of A Chef" is devoted to the French Laundry.
