I've heard about it before, even seen a show or two on them, or where they were at least a topic. From what I saw the cows were extremely pampered, taken outside on regular basis, kept very clean, massaged, I even saw one spraying sake and oils on the cow and rubbing it in. I imagine the techniques vary from farm to farm, so maybe what you initially heard was in part true, though I'd think any beating that would actually damage the cow would cause bruising which is probably undesirable as far as the meat is concerned.

Someone mentioned to me a long time ago that they thought kobe beef was kept still all its life and beaten regularly to maintain tender muscle fibers.

I believe that things like that are sometimes done with veal calves. Or so it is claimed. I've never heard that about Kobe beef, though.

I'm actually watching "Iron Man" right now, and I'm at the scene where Tony Stark and his friend is in a private jet being served by Stewardess, and her pronounciation of the word 'Sake' is slowly driving me nuts.

But stewardesses on stripper poles made up for it.

It's not "Koh-bee"? What is it, then? "Koh-bay"? In any case, this truly made my mouth water -- that beef looked so tender and juicy, just melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Yum. I think I need to plan my dinner reservations. Laura, I think the person that told you that the Kobe beef cattle were kept still and regularly beaten might have had it confused with veal, which (as the mythology goes) is kept in a box all its (shortened) life, and fed a strict diet, so that its meat remains tender and unstriated. Or so I've been told.

I really do love a good steak, but the idea of pampering an animal in preparation to it's murderous consumption isn't something I enjoy thinking about. I know Ted Nugent wants everyone to know what they eat, but for me, eating anything mammalian requires that I don't think too much on it's origin or preparation.

I had a Kobe steak once in Kyushu back in 96. It was everything they claimed it to be. Very nice.

Captain Kirk as I recall cheated on the Kobe Yashi Maroo scenario. Well, I dont know if he cheated, but he modified the scenario anyway.

Kobe beef is great, it's the only thing that even comes near American steak that can be found in Asia.

I used to work at a very high end private resort in CA. Often times when large groups came in for banquets there would be left over food. Sometimes Kobe Beef Steaks. We'd all get a bite. MMmmmm. It's nothing like what a sirloin tastes or feels like in your mouth. It's like the difference between a pork chop and some bacon strips.

There are many rumors about how Kobe Cattle are raised. I've heard them all too. The chef I used to work for told me that the men who raise the Kobe Cattle are very secretive and don't share their secrets (or cattle species) with anyone. That's why you can't get it anywhere else. They don't allow anyone else to breed them.

Have you ever been to Asia? I'm going to Japan again in three weeks. They've got great steaks just about everywhere.
