Awhh, when my dogs do that, I make sure to gently wake them up to let them know that everything is okay and nothing bad will happen to them. They do the same for me, actually.

I always wonder if they understand what happened when they wake up. Do they have any understanding of dreaming or do they just think they're suddenly somewhere else?

My friends dogs do that often. One of them even starts to run a bit.

If you make bird sounds really quietly near them they really get going and will wake each other up with barking.
