So, here's a bit of obsession for ya'.

I have the original North American theatrical release on VHS and Laserdisc (yes, Laserdisc ), the Director's cut on Laserdisc and DVD, and the German mini-series on DVD as well- that version is something like 7 hours long.

When it comes out in hi-def, I'll be the first in line.

Interesting fact: Herbert Grönemeyer (the guy that climbs into bed at the end) went on to become one of Germanys most famous singers. In 1994, Grönemeyer was the first non-English-speaking artist who was invited by MTV to do an unplugged concert

Here is the ballad "Der Weg" (The Way) that he wrote after his wife and brother died from cancer in 1998, both within 3 days of each other.

As far as i know, the tv version is the longest one available on DVD at around 280 minutes. I still have the same version with intros and recaps in every episode on VHS, adds up to almost six hours, if i'm not mistaken.

Unfortunatly, the English versions (subtitles as well) are just horrible. I tend to bitch about the quality of dubbed versions of English movies and tv shows all the bloody time, but Das Boot is among the worst i've ever seen in that regard
