US Economy unsustainable; former Comptroller General talk

David Walker, Comptroller General of the US, resigned effective on March 12, 2008 after tiring of his warnings falling on deaf ears. He has accepted the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of the newly established Peter G. Peterson Foundation.

“As Comptroller General of the United States and head of the GAO, there are real limitations on what I can do and say in connection with key public policy issues, especially issues that directly relate to GAO's client -- the Congress,” Walker continued. “My new position will provide me with the ability and resources to more aggressively address a range of current and emerging challenges facing our country, including advocating specific policy solutions and courses of action. This move will enable me to sharpen my messages and bring focus and attention to the fiscal and other key sustainability challenges that I and others have been discussing during the past several years."

“In the final analysis, while I love both my job as Comptroller General and the GAO, I love my country more, and I believe that leading this Foundation represents a unique opportunity and will be good for my country,” Walker concluded.

This appointment is a 15 year appointment purposefully in an effort to isolate this position from politics. This is to allow the person filling the position may speak the truth without fear of losing their position.

Eminent domain is an exercise of the power of government or quasi-government agencies (such as airport authorities, highway commissions, community development agencies, and utility companies) to take private property for public use.

On June 23, 2005, the case of Kelo v. New London was decided by the Supreme Court regarding eminent domain used and given to another private party. While upholding eminent domain for economic development purposes as a "public use" under Connecticut's statute, the court emphasized that "nothing in our opinion precludes any State from placing further restrictions on its exercise of the takings power."

Several States have enacted legislation further defining proper use of eminent domain as a result of the above decision. However, this opened the door for eminent domain to be used in case of taking private propery and giving to other private properties if felt it was in the "public good." "Public good" usually involves higher property taxes...

Obvious where I stand on the issue, isn't it? :)

A number of credit card companies now issue credit cards with embedded RFIDs (radio frequency ID tags), with promises of enhanced security and speedy transactions.

But on today's episode of Boing Boing tv, hacker and inventor Pablos Holman shows Xeni how you can use about $8 worth of gear bought on eBay to read personal data from those credit cards -- cardholder name, credit card number, and whatever else your bank embeds in this manner.

Fears over data leaks from RFID-enabled cards aren't new, and some argue they're overblown -- but this demo shows just how cheap and easy the "sniffing" can be.

Keith Olbermann interviews whistleblower Mark Klein about AT&T's secret room set up for the NSA for the illegal wiretapping. This interview came as Mark Klein was lobbying Congress to not give the telecom's retroactive immunity for these actions as that would bury any chance of full or even partial disclosure of what they were actually doing.

Of course the Senate passed a bill that gave telecom immunity. The House has currently passed a bill without telecom immunity and sent it back to the senate.

This occured in San Francisco. This is a major AT&T hub and site of the vast majority of the Pacific undersea cables for data traffic.
